O Jesus, I have promised

E465
1
O Jesus, I have promised
  To serve Thee to the end;
Be Thou forever near me,
  My Master and my Friend;
I shall not fear the battle
  If Thou art by my side,
Nor wander from the pathway
  If Thou wilt be my Guide.
2
Oh, let me feel Thee near me;
  The world is ever near;
I see the sights that dazzle,
  The tempting sounds I hear;
My foes are ever near me,
  Around me and within;
But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer,
  And shield my soul from sin.
3
Oh, let me hear Thee speaking,
  In accents clear and still,
Above the storms of passion,
  The murmurs of self-will;
Oh, speak to reassure me,
  To hasten, or control;
Oh, speak, and make me listen,
  Thou Guardian of my soul.
4
O Jesus, Thou hast promised
  To all who follow Thee
That where Thou art in glory
  There shall Thy servant be;
And Jesus, I have promised
  To serve Thee to the end;
Oh, give me grace to follow,
  My Master and my Friend.
5
Oh, let me see Thy footmarks,
  And in them plant mine own;
My hope to follow duly
  Is in Thy strength alone.
Oh, guide me, call me, draw me,
  Uphold me to the end;
And then to rest receive me,
  My Savior and my Friend.

Today on my 74th Birthday as I was meditating very early on Psalm 51 and God’s multitude of tender mercies to me, the Spirit brought this hymn to mind as my prayer was from this day forward to focus on the soon coming of our Lord Jesus’s coming! Every word of every verse was soothing and strength to my soul to meet this goal of living and serving Christ with a sense of urgency.

Woke this morning with a heavy heart. Started to search for hymns I had sung as a chorister in UK some 60 years ago. Found this and cried. How I wish I had kept the words with me all those years. Thank you Lord for reminding me.

A hymn of personal prayer and dedication. This morning I woke up with this hymn and searched my SS&S but couldn't get it til I got to the net. It's refreshing. Thank you Jesus Christ for the inspiration you gave the composers.

Just this early morning as I was praying, this hymn came up in my spirit, I perceived it so strong in the spirit. The amazing thing is that, the last time I sang this hymn was during my secondary school days, that's 20 Years ago. Thank you Holy Spirit for this wonderful hymn.

I thank God for inspiring this ageless Hymn. It’s ever fresh. Whenever I sing/hear it, God uses it to refresh & focus me. I decided to look for its wordings/Lyrics again today, as I’m preparing some admonition for Our Discovery Centre - a Youth Group - (I Tim 4:12, 16).
