I heard the voice of Jesus say

1
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
  "Come unto Me, and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one, lay down
  Thy head upon My breast."
I came to Jesus as I was,
  Weary, and worn, and sad;
I found in Him a resting-place,
  And He has made me glad.
2
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
  "Behold, I freely give
The living water: thirsty one,
  Stoop down, and drink, and live."
I came to Jesus, and I drank
  Of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
  And now I live in Him.
3
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
  "I am this dark world's Light;
Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise,
  And all thy day be bright."
I looked to Jesus, and I found
  In Him my Star, my Sun;
And in that Light of life I'll walk
  Till trav'lling days are done.

I am just meditating on this hymn in the aircraft right about now with tears and passion for my Christ and Saviour. Thank you Jesus.

I wonder what Horatius Bonar would think if he knew that people from all over the world would be appreciating his hymn more than 150 years later. His body is buried in the Canongate in Edinburgh from where he awaits the resurrection.

This hymn is indeed soothing to the soul. It’s also very refreshing to the weary one.

Truly I have found in Jesus my resting place and He has made me glad. All praise be unto Him for ever.

Is there another verse or stanza? There seems to be a bit more in my head. :-)

This song and tune keeps the memory of my late father alive and gives me hope and assurance in our Lord Jesus Christ.

In Matthew 11 verses 28 to 30, we read of Jesus's call to His disciple to lay their burdens - chiefly sin - with Him, and He will then give rest to them. Rest from sin includes forgiveness, cleansing and power to overcome sin and temptation. He does not audibly call us, but through His Word, the Bible.
