What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
Leaning, leaning,
Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.
Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.

O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!

What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
I have peace complete with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
I have peace complete with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!

One afternoon in 1887, music teacher A. J. Showalter dismissed his class and returned to his rooming house in Hartsville, Alabama. There he found letters from 2 former students, each with a similar story. Both of them had lost their wives, and both wives had died on the same day. Showalter began writing letters of condolence. The Scripture that came to mind was Deuteronomy 33:26-27, the assurance of God's "everlasting arms" supporting us.
Then he wrote a 3rd letter, to Elisha Hoffman, a hymnwriter in Pennsylvania. Showalter suggested that Hoffman write a hymn on that theme. He even suggested the wording of the chorus. Hoffman responded quickly with 3 stanzas and Showalter supplied the music. - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton
It seems this hymn was produced by a life caring for others, having the living word including the riches of the Old Testament, and fellowship.

This hymn takes me back to East Griffin Holiness Church. I still get chills listening to it. Thank God.

Rest Eternal, Senator McGovern, You have indeed rested in the Everlasting Arms of the Lord you served, both in your personal life and as servant of America. May we follow your example. May it be so.

Such a peace dwells in our hearts when our hope is in the Lord! In His everlasting Arms, we can hear love's sweet chords.

I love this song because it brings hope and inspiration to my soul. It is comforting to know that there is someone whose arms you can lean on when faced with the trials and tribulations of this life.

It has been a long time I haven't sung hymns and listening to this wonderful song again made me recall the first few years of my walk with the LORD. Indeed HIS arms are not short to reach us out but they make me feel so secured whatever path I am walking on. HIS everlasting arms to protect me are my greatest comfort when things get tough. I do like the tune and tempo as well.

This is the song that when I first heard it, it sums up what my faith in christ is, even though I am passing through difficult time in my personal and spiritual life I have the assurance that HIS everlasting arms will hold me up, words are not enough to describe what happens in my spirit when I listen to or sing this song.
