1
Alas, and did my Savior bleed?
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?
At the cross, at the cross where
I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!
2
Was it for sins that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!
At the cross, at the cross where
I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!
3
Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut His glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker, died
For man, His creature’s sin.
At the cross, at the cross where
I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!
4
Thus might I hide my blushing face
While His dear cross appears.
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt mine eyes to tears.
At the cross, at the cross where
I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!
5
But drops of grief can ne’er repay
The debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself away,
’Tis all that I can do.
At the cross, at the cross where
I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

Indeed, V. Holland, March 26, 2022, was right in his assessment: "I suspect the ‘chorus’ was added later, and not by Dr Watts. It doesn’t blend with the richness of his wonderful poetry." Richard Miller, July 2, 2016 alludes to this, and then quotes something worthwhile and wonderful.

Something different for the person in charge of running this website: As of late, the blue field, highlighting one stanza after another, has started to jump from 1 to 3 and then to 5. This is happening with every hymn, not just the one above. Henrich

Absolutely love this hymn, especially the second last and final verse. Fanny Crosby, one of the most famous hymn writers of all time, became a born again Christian as she stood up with joy when she heard the final line of this song! It is still so powerful today, God is so good and thank You Jesus for saving my soul from hell and sin in July 2021! God bless my brothers and sisters here in Christ. Lord, use us for Your glory to labor in your ripe harvest.

This hymn should be our daily anthem that we sing to ourselves and to others
