Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty

1
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty!
Unto everlasting days our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, Holy, Holy, Merciful and Mighty!
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!
2
Holy, Holy, Holy! all the saints adore Thee;
Heaven’s elders cast their crowns down by the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim worship too before Thee,
Who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
3
Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see,
Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

On a trip to Bangladesh in the 1970s, I remember visiting a church, dedicated to Reginald Heber, the author of the hymn, “Holy, holy, holy“. I thought, “that great hymn-writer was a missionary in this far-off corner of Asia!“ Heber was born in Cheshire England in 1783. Soon after completing his education, Reginald was ordained in the Anglican Church, and served in a small church in the village of Hodnet. Reginald developed a reputation for being a devoted follower of God, and a wonderful poet, which was the perfect recipe for an enduring hymn. in 1823, Reginald was called to serve in India. He became the Bishop of Calcutta, which made him leader over missions in India, Ceylon, and Autralia. During his time in India, Reginald worked tirelessly to build a training school for local clergy so the area would have ministers for the long term . He also traveled across India, spreading the gospel. Over the years, the climate and his heavy responsibilities wore on his health. One Sunday, after an outdoor sermon to a large gathering, Reginald dropped dead from heat stroke. Over the years he had written a number of hymns, which he never saw publication for. But his wife saw the beauty in her husband’s work, and she put a collection of hymns together and had them published. Fifty-seven hymns were included, one of which stood out far above the others. “Holy holy, holy, Lord God, Almighty,” which Alfred Lord Tennyson, the renowned English author, considered to be the greatest hymn ever written! I recall my dad, loving it as well. Heber’s hymns have been a blessing to many for over 200 years.

Wonderful song containing so much truth. I learnt this from a book called the 'Redemption Hymnal' that contains an extra verse:

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty!

All Thy works shall praise Thy Name in

earth and sky and sea;

Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty,

God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

This song thrills the soul. We serve a mighty, just, and Holy God. He is filled with love and promises for his people. One day when the sky is rolled up like a scroll and we see the new heaven and earth we will be with him in his joyful presence for ever more! Redeemed, loved, no more sickness, no more suffering.... peace and ever lasting joy.
