Fill My Cup, Lord

LSM207 NS340
1
Like the woman at the well, I was seeking
For things that could not satisfy.
And then I heard my Savior speaking—
"Draw from My well that never shall run dry."

Fill my cup, Lord;
I lift it up Lord;
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul.
Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more.
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole.
2
There are millions in this world who are seeking
For pleasures earthly goods afford.
But none can match the wondrous treasure
That I find in Jesus Christ my Lord.
3
So my brother if the things that this world gives you
Leave hungers that won't pass away,
My blessed Lord will come and save you
If you kneel to Him and humbly pray—

Years ago, I served Wesley United Methodist Church, 133 Ponce de Leon Blvd, in Miami, Florida, where Richard Blanchard was pastor when he wrote this song. He told me the story of how this song came to be. He was in the office at Wesley, waiting for a couple who had an appointment to talk about their wedding. The couple was late. Rev. Blanchard was getting more and more frustrated as he waited. He went to the piano in a Sunday School classroom and sat down. Though he wrote many songs in his life, this was the only one that just poured out, inspired by the Spirit, words and tune. It has been a blessing to so many people and translated into many languages. His frustration melted away as he sought the living water at the piano that day. This is what he told me in 1988 or 1989. Blanchard served Wesley 1952-1958, so the song was written in the fifties. I served Wesley 1985-1990.

I was listening to Lenard Ravenhill today and he quoted some hymns and I've been joyous all day listening to words and music that blesses the repented heart. It's never too late to come to Christ and embrace these old songs. I was so lost and He had His hand on me and by His grace I have been set free. Thank you Lord Jesus for loving me. I love you beyond what words can express. I use to think that you were a myth but wow, you live and breathe in me. Amen.
