Turn your eyes upon Jesus

1
O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There's light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
  In the light of His glory and grace.
2
Through death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there;
O'er us sin no more hath dominion
For more than conqu'rors we are!
3
His Word shall not fail you, He promised;
Believe Him and all will be well;
Then go to a world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!

Sang this in Sunday School and Youth Group. I did not understand it then but when life's great challenges confront me, it came back suddenly. We must keep our eyes on Jesus to live this life. Otherwise, we will be like Peter, distracted by the angry waves while walking on water towards Jesus. Keep your eyes upon Jesus. Faith will follow!

How soothing is the music and how reassuring are the words of this hymn. Indeed as we gaze on Jesus we look away from our predicament and draw strength from Him, so that we can hear Him say as He said to Paul: "My grace is sufficient for you..." 2 Cor. 12:9. Thank God for His faithfulness and lovingkindness and for the author and composer of this hymn.

Praise God in times of uncertainties one thing is certain that God is there. "Be still and know that I am God..." Praise His holy name, "I AM". God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, the blessed One, eternal, changeless God, always, "...a very help in times of trouble."

A year and a half after I last commented, I can still enjoy this song, yet in a different way.

Lord, we love You.

Isn't it sweet that we can gaze on His face? And He takes care of our soul?

This song is one of my old time favorites. However, it is only the chorus that I have learned. I didnt know that there were verses in this song. So I just learned it now from your site. Thank you for posting it. By the way I want to share this one chorus that my friend shared with me. I really dont know who wrote it...same tune with the chorus:

"Fix your thoughts upon Jesus

And others will not take His place

And in every trial, He will give you power

'til at last you have won the last race."

O Lord Jesus! I confess today my soul is weary and troubled. Cause me to turn my eyes upon You, not anyone else, not anything else. Upon You Lord, to look FULL into Your wonderful face. May the things of earth grow dim, in the light of Your glory and grace. I declare that I still love You Lord Jesus!

I have enjoyed this hymn for many years. If I may, here is some background on this hymn:

The author and composer of this hymn, Helen H Lemmel, relates that one day, in 1918, a missionary friend gave her a tract entitled "Focused."

The pamphlet contained these words - - -

"So then, turn your eyes upon Him, look full into His face and you will find that the things of earth will acquire a strange new dimness."

These words made a deep impression upon her. She could not dismiss them from her mind. She recalls this experience following the reading of that tract: "Suddenly, as if commanded to stop and listen, I stood still, and singing in my soul and spirit was the Chorus, with not one conscious moment of putting word to word to make rhyme, or note to note to make melody. The verses were written the same week, after the usual manner of composition, but none the less dictated by the Holy Spirit."

I really enjoyed this hymn. As a young person, I am getting to know the Lord in a more personal and intimate way. And as I see the Lord more as my Friend and Companion, I realize that all the worries and troubles I have, everything I go through, the Lord is there with me. I just have to turn to Him and enjoy Him! And my burdens will be carried for me! That I can gain more of Him!
