I'm pressing on the upward way

1
I'm pressing on the upward way,
New heights I'm gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
"Lord, plant my feet on higher ground."
  Lord, lift me up, and let me stand
By faith on Canaan's tableland;
A higher plane than I have found,
  Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
2
My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.
3
I want to live above the world,
Though Satan's darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.
4
I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I'll pray till rest I've found,
"Lord, lead me on to higher ground."

Ageless and soothes the inner mind. Great lyric. Good to meditate every single line of this great hymn.

The first time I heard of this hymn, about 15 years ago, was when I attended an Annual Convention of the Deeper Life Church at Brofoyedu in Ashanti Region. Nothing in life mattered to me again except to wholeheartedly and prayerfully meditate on every single word of this hymn. Till now whenever I sing this hymn or hear it play, my heart is humbled and I yearn more for the higher ground. I thank You LORD JESUS that You came to save us. Amen.

My mum really loves this song and she always sings it to me when I was little till now, especially when things don't really seem right. Ever since, I now do really love this song and it also encourages me whenever I am down. Glory be to God.

A beautiful hymn...which my dad aged 80 years, heard and sang during his childhood days. This site helped me to get him the tune which he had long forgotten.... me and my wife Beatrice got to learn and teach my daughter Cressida.

I thank God for a song as this. Some of us we go through so much and these are just the words we need to hear. Our God is Faithful!

"Pressing.. New heights..Gaining..Every day...Though some may... I want to scale the utmost height". These are the words that have touched me the most.

How deeply gratifying to find this inspiring and marvelously uplifting hymn on-line.

Recently I have been trying to recall some of the words. HIGHER GROUND has been on my top list of favorites since childhood. Then at an early age at mid-week prayer services when sometimes the selection of a song was requested, I would suggest Higher Ground.

How very moving it has been to note the comments of other striving Christians

around the world; for we are "called to be saints" and we pray for one another; I am further reminded of the message in the song:

"When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing it will be; when we all see Jesus we'll sing and shout the victory."

This is one of my favorite hymn, This song is definitely a prayer for me that God will lift me up and make me stand in spite of all troubles that I am passing through! Usually we sing this sitting in my church but as for me i'm the first one to jump up with my hands in the air. Praise God!!!!

I get encouraged, my hunger deepens for the Lord every time I see the lyrics of this song hung up my bedside. Listening to it today has lifted me.

Glory be to God!

To be in the spirit is the key, the secret. In the spirit we will experience many wonderful things of Christ because we have crossed the Jordan and entered into Canaan. When we are in the spirit, we are in the rest, and we are in the Holy of Holies. Therefore, we must always renounce the natural man, the outer man. For example, many times in the Lord's work I was tempted by the enemy to quarrel with others. On those occasions I felt that my reason was right, that the case was mine, and that I had the doctrine to support me. Yet while I was trying to speak, something deep within restricted me and stopped me. In order to go along with that deep feeling, I had to drop my quarreling. Consequently, it seemed that I had nothing to say. But I can testify that every time I went along with the spirit, there was victory. If we take care of our spirit, the mighty One in our spirit will be our strength. We will be transcendent and victorious over many things. When we come to the meetings, we will come with many items of Christ to contribute, either in prayer, singing, giving a testimony, or speaking a short word. Philippians 4:13 says, "I am able to do all things in Him who empowers me." But where does Christ empower us? He empowers us in our spirit. Our mind is the stronghold and the open gate for the enemy, but our spirit is the base for the Lord to do His work. Thus, when we go along with the mind, we are defeated, even though we may be doing something good. But if we go along with the spirit, we will be victorious. We will be on a high mountain, on higher ground, and, in the words of a hymn, "on Canaan's tableland" (Hymns, #396). We will be in the heavens and will be transcendent.
