O God, our help in ages past

1
O God, our help in ages past,
  Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
  And our eternal home.
2
Under the shadow of Thy throne
  Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
  And our defence is sure.
3
Before the hills in order stood,
  Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
  To endless years the same.
4
A thousand ages in Thy sight
  Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
  Before the rising sun.
5
Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
  Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
  Dies at the opening day.
6
O God, our help in ages past,
  Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while life shall last,
  And our eternal home.

We woke up at midnight to praise the Lord for 30 blissful years of marriage and this hymn came to mind as so relevant to our journey of three decades. It has been the Lord through thick and thin and we trust Him for the years ahead. We would like to condemn the evil we observed in that many hymns have been changed from the original lyrics; the sad thing is that the changes are so fundamental/material because they touch on basic bible doctrines. It took us knowing the original lyrics to find this one with the complete stanza and original lyrics. Others removed saints from the second stanza and removed two other stanza that talk about God as ageless and timeless. Indeed these are the end times. People will have a form of Godliness but deny the power thereof! 2 Timothy 3 vs 5

This hymn may have had its inspiration from Psalm 90. It reminds us of the brevity of life in comparison to eternity. Let's make our lives count today.

This song came to my mind as I did my devotion this morning. As I sang it, it brought back memories of years past and reminded me that my God is the same yesterday, today and forever. The God who delivered Daniel from the lions den, who delivered Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego from the fiery furnace, who took Joseph from the pit to the palace... He"s still the same God today! And will be forever! Hallelujah!

This hymn came to my mind as I set on the bus and a lot if memories flashed through my mind. This was a family hymn while I was growing up and the first hymn my family sang on the first day of every new year after the mud night watch. I remember my dad and mum ambassadors of Christ. God fearing parents and I pray may their souls continue to rest in perfect peace. This hymn comes it great emotions and has given me all reasons to thank God for past, the present and my future. With this hymn I have more assurance God is in total control of all about me and will keep me to the end while I depend totally upon Him.
