We are familiar with the hymn "Amazing Grace." Although this is a good hymn, it does not speak of the Triune God as our portion for our enjoyment. When this hymn was written, the experiential knowledge of God among the Lord's people had not come to this point. Even as recent as fifty years ago, Christians did not have the understanding of grace as the Triune God experienced and enjoyed by us. But standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before us, we have come to know that grace is far more than merely unmerited favor. Grace is the Triune God—the Father, the Son, and the Spirit—processed for our experience and enjoyment.

Around 1970 Christian Herald magazine polled its readers for their favorite hymns. Amazing grace was 9th on their all time favorite list. Here is their top 10:

"It helps me to interpret the words when I know that John Newton, the author, was the son of a sea captain, who, after his mother's death joined his father at age 11 on his ship.
I'm interested to know that he and his father apparently had a generation gap and they came to a parting of the ways, and that John's life turned into one of degradation - fighting, drinking, jail. Serving on a slave ship, he so infuriated the captain that he was made a slave of the slaves - another chapter in the Prodigal Son story. But then, somehow, John Newton came upon a copy of Thomas a Kempis' book, Imitation of Christ, and his heart responded. I can see him pondering those all-surrendering prayers of the author.
But it took a storm at sea in which Newton almost lost his life for him to turn everything over to God. He became a minister at age 39 and during his 15 year pastorate at Olney, England, he wrote the words to many hymns. The great composer William Cowper, also of Olney, set many of them to music and they collaborated on a famous hymnal. So with that background, I know what Newton is talking about when he writes about an amazing grace:
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see."
