The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell.
It goes beyond the highest star
And reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled
And pardoned from his sin.
Than tongue or pen can ever tell.
It goes beyond the highest star
And reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled
And pardoned from his sin.
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

When hoary time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall;
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call;
God’s love, so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall;
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call;
God’s love, so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
And were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

How we need to appreciate our dear brothers in the 19th century (1801-1900). Their endeavor to experience Christ was so amazing and powerful. It continues to speak in these days. This hymn always reminds me of John 3:16: for God so love the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that every one who believes into Him would not perish, but would have eternal life.

Since Jesus Christ saved my soul from the "Hell" that awaited it, I have never known a Love so profound and real as the Love of my Saviour, who took all my sin and shame! Dying in the stead of a wicked and vile creature as I am! I will forever sing this song and be comforted in a true Love that I pray all men may come to know, who Christ alone teacheth!! (Job 36:22) "Behold, God exalteth by His power: who teacheth like Him?"

Thank God for His great and measureless love!
May He encourage, strengthen and bless you in an extra special way.
He has proven faithful to me all my life.

This hymn, whilst broad in its literary span, does not treat God's love in a general sense. Its sentiment speaks of the burden and depths of God's love in verse 1, the unchanging nature of His love in verse 2, and what unbounded appreciation is required from us of His love. It is here that we realize that we must as "scribes" be learning His boundless love in His economy all the time, with hearts saturated with such good matter concerning Him (Psa. 45). The "ink" with which we write is the Spirit (2 Cor. 3) as the Spirit sheds abroad in our hearts His love. O how much do we need to write concerning the God of love, even to the extent, that we the ministers of the new covenant would be His living letters!

As human beings we have no earthly idea the extent of our Father in heaven's love for us. Whatever we need is already there, He's just waiting for us either to ask or for our faith to catch up to Him.

The last verse of this song was found written on the walls of an asylum by a man thought to be demented. This shows the mysterious dealings of our God

For almost a hundred years, Christians have known and felt the special nature of the powerful words of this song. What is not commonly known among us is the fact that one of the verses was originally written by a Jewish Rabbi!
Show one of the verses of that hymn to any Orthodox Jew, and they'll be able to recognize the words of Akdamut Milin, an Aramaic poem read on Shavuot (Pentecost). It was originally written over 900 years ago by Rabbi Mayer of Worms, Germany!
It is time that we Christian "branches" realize we do not bear the root of the tree. The root bears us. (Romans 11:18)
