The love of God is greater far

1
The love of God is greater far
  Than tongue or pen can ever tell.
It goes beyond the highest star
  And reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
  God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled
  And pardoned from his sin.

O love of God, how rich and pure!
  How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
    The saints’ and angels’ song.
2
When hoary time shall pass away,
  And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall;
When men who here refuse to pray,
  On rocks and hills and mountains call;
God’s love, so sure, shall still endure,
  All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
  The saints’ and angels’ song.
3
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
  And were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
  And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
  Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
  Though stretched from sky to sky.

This hymn is so powerful and so sweet, it breaks my heart.

It has been widely reported that the words to this Hymn were discovered written on the walls of a mental institution with author unknown. What a blessing this song has been to me from the days of my childhood to me now a person in mid seventies.

What wonderful words. I have linked it up with Ephesians 3:18-19. The breadth, length, depth and height of the love of Christ. How wonderful and yet how sad that men who today "refuse to pray" will one day call upon the mountains to fall upon them - let us go out and tell them of this LOVE before it is too late.

I know there is a story behind this song about a prisoner. Would someone be kind enough to share the story. Thanks!

Thank you. This song has meant so much to me over the years. I needed to find the words to expand on my thoughts about the love of God. Thanks for making it available on the computer. God is so awesome. You are doing a great work. Thank you.

I am blessed to read and hear this excellent hymn.The composer has a unique talent. The love of GOD is constant and infinite. Let us always honour and praise God with humility for our daily blessings.

This is one of my favourite hymns. How profound! How true! Ooh that all men would comprehend the love of God!

Pen and tongue are the best instruments to describe anything, but it's indeed true and worth saying that the love of God is far greater than what the two can tell to the world... It's unfathomably deep!!!
