Jesus, lover of my soul

1
Jesus, lover of my soul,
Let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll,
While the tempest still is high:
Hide me, O my Savior, hide,
Till the storm of life is past;
Safe into the haven guide;
O receive my soul at last.
2
Other refuge have I none,
Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;
Leave, oh, leave me not alone,
Still support and comfort me.
All my trust on Thee is stayed,
All my help from Thee I bring;
Cover my defenseless head
With the shadow of Thy wing.
3
Thou, O Christ, art all I want;
More than all in Thee I find;
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
Heal the sick and lead the blind.
Just and holy is Thy name,
I am all unrighteousness;
Vile and full of sin I am,
Thou art full of truth and grace.
4
Plenteous grace with Thee is found,
Grace to cover all my sin;
Let the healing streams abound;
Make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the fountain art,
Freely let me take of Thee;
Spring Thou up within my heart,
Rise to all eternity.

Today, this song is coming to me with a fresh message of encouragement and strength. It reminds me of my sinfulness so well and the fact of Jesus being my unconditional lover and refuge. With such a Savior, what or who else would I ever need? I am going to come back to this song over and over again for the rest of my life.

This Hymn lifted out of dipression...

Hide me, O my Savior, hide,

Till the storm of life is past;

Safe into the haven guide;

O receive my soul at last.

Other refuge have I none,

Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;

Leave, oh, leave me not alone,

Still support and comfort me.

All my trust on Thee is stayed,

All my help from Thee I bring;

Cover my defenseless head

With the shadow of Thy wing.

Thou, O Christ, art all I want;

More than all in Thee I find;

Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,

Heal the sick and lead the blind.

Just and holy is Thy name,

I am all unrighteousness;

Vile and full of sin I am,

Thou art full of truth and grace.

Charles Wesley, the father of hymnody and the “first Methodist” wrote over 8,000 hymns. One for every day after his conversion until the day he died. This hymn is his crowning work.

There are two accounts as to the occasion in which he wrote it. One version tells us that during a stormy night, Charles, unable to sleep, opened his bedroom window to watch the storm. As he was viewing the stormy scene, suddenly a bird exhausted by the wind and hotly persued by a hawk, flew into the window and Charles Wesley’s breast for protection. Having saved the bird and placed it in security, he turned to his desk and wrote this hymn so realistic and so descriptive of fear and intense longing of the anxious soul to find safety and rest.

Another account tells that Wesley, while in Killyleag County Down, Ireland had been preaching in the open fields. In the process, he was persued by a mob violently opposed to his message. Charles was given a hiding place by a local farmer’s wife and is said to have penned this words to the hymn while hearing the cries of his pursuers nearby.

We thank the Lord who loved us to an extent of dying for us. The same way we should be crazy lovers of Jesus.
