1
Fight the good fight with all thy might!
Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right;
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
Thy joy and crown eternally.
Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right;
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
Thy joy and crown eternally.
2
Run the straight race through God’s good grace,
Lift up thine eyes, and seek His face;
Life with its way before us lies,
Christ is the path, and Christ the prize.
Lift up thine eyes, and seek His face;
Life with its way before us lies,
Christ is the path, and Christ the prize.
3
Cast care aside, lean on thy Guide;
His boundless mercy will provide;
Trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its life, and Christ its love.
His boundless mercy will provide;
Trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its life, and Christ its love.
4
Faint not nor fear, His arms are near,
He changeth not, and thou art dear;
Only believe, and thou shalt see
That Christ is all in all to thee.
He changeth not, and thou art dear;
Only believe, and thou shalt see
That Christ is all in all to thee.

A short but poignant hymn capturing many verses from 1 and 2 Timothy.
2 Tim. 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith...
1 Tim. 6:11-12: But you, O man of God, flee these things, and pursue righteousness, Godliness, faith, love, endurance, meekness. Fight the good fight of the faith; lay hold on the eternal life, to which you were called and have confessed the good confession before many witnesses.
2 Tim. 2:12: if we endure, we will also reign with Him.
2 Timothy 4:7-8: I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, with which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will recompense me in that day, and not only me but also all those who have loved His appearing.
Oh Lord! We give ourselves to you to follow Paul's exhortations to hasten your return!

This just popped into my head after my arthritic pain made me resolve to 'fight the good fight' until He comes for us. Haven't sung it since I was a kid, but the words came back to me pretty well. Like Catherine Mary, I was so comforted by the line 'Faint not, nor fear.. ' It was like My Jesus was giving me a spiritual hug right there! We are so blessed to have these wonderful old hymns still in circulation. They speak to us and encourage us, as with every generation.

This is one of my favourite hymn; it motivates me and strengthens me. This inspirational hymns also reminds us that we would be faced with trails, temptations and challenges but that we should trust in God with all our heart and lean not on our understanding nor strength. By doing so, we shall surely triumph.

I was feeling battle weary this morning, having fought the good fight for righteousness and the words to his hymn suddenly fell into my mind. I had a good sing but had to look up the final words to the first verse!

I was reading Joshua 18 how God had given the land to the Israelites but they hadn't taken possession of it, and was struck by how much God has given us ( status of beloved children, access to his presence in joy, belonging, security, peace, power to build his kingdom in the strength of the holy spirit) and how much of this I still don't claim. I remembered this hymn although I haven't sung it in years and was blessed as these truths settled deeper into my soul. God has given us so much, and by trusting in Christ who has won the victory we can enjoy such blessings today.
