Sometimes a light surprises

E706
1
Sometimes a light surprises
  The Christian while he sings;
It is the Lord who rises
  With healing in His wings;
When comforts are declining,
  He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining,
  To cheer it after rain.
2
In holy contemplation
  We sweetly then pursue
The theme of God’s salvation,
  And find it ever new;
Set free from present sorrow,
  We cheerfully can say—
E’en let the unknown morrow
  Bring with it what it may.
3
It can bring with it nothing,
  But He will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing,
  Will clothe His people too:
Beneath the spreading heavens
  No creature but is fed;
And He, who feeds the ravens,
  Will give His children bread.
4
Though vine nor fig tree neither
  Their wonted fruit shall bear;
Though all the fields should wither
  Nor flocks nor herds be there;
Yet God the same abiding,
  His praise shall tune my voice,
For, while in Him confiding,
  I cannot but rejoice.

Waow!!!! What a hymn. Can be sung with so many tunes and all are splendid. This hymn is truly special. Rich in meaning and can lift a hopeless soul. The story behind the hymn is quite touching. Our God is awesome.

Very soulful song.

Always struggle to keep back tears each time I sing.

One of my late father's favourite hymns and I love it even more for that reason. I find vs. 4 really inspiring!

Ohemaa Akosua Safowaa

I heard this song today at the funeral of a great woman through whom God has lifted several people from grass to grace. Beautiful hymn.

The hymn always lifts my spirit up.

The wordings are so apt as I know that with God I am fine. I am blessed with very good thing. That God is my provider and I can trust Him.

It is awesome.

As the last words of the hymn

For while in Him confiding, I can not but rejoice. What a promise.

I remember singing this in boarding school in Nigeria and since then, I have been remembering in on the odd occasion.

This is one of my inspiring, soul-lifting hymns whenever I feel low and lonely.

I heard this hymn sung for the first time at my father's funeral in 1994 - it has since become one of my favourite hymns. I agree with the prophet Malachi that, rain or shine, poverty or plenty, we must praise the Lord.

This song I learnt in my secondary school days, even up till now I am still enjoying it. Yes, He who feeds the raven will also give His bread. Praise the Lord.
