1
What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
  Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
  Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!

Leaning, leaning,
Safe and secure from all alarms;
  Leaning, leaning,
  Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.
2
O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
  Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
O how bright the path grows from day to day,
  Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
3
What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
  Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!
I have peace complete with my Lord so near,
  Leaning on the Everlasting Arms!

What have I to dread!!

What have I to fear!!!

Leaning on the everlasting arms.

I woke up with a the thought of this song this morning, after I searched for the lyrics I come out to say this is not just another song but a message of hope and comfort to a weary soul.

Last night I decided to separate myself by moving to the adjoining room in my apartment, away from my wife and children in order to have a fellowship with the Lord, as I woke up this morning this song came ringing in my heart and I have been singing it since then. What a fellowship, what a joy divine. The fear of death is gone when I sang this song alleluyah.

What have you to dread, what have you to fear! Nothing at all! His arms are a safe haven. He will never let you down. He will love you to your last breath...and through all eternity...lean on the everlasting arms....you are safe and secure from all alarms...in His arms.

May God help us to live the Words of this beautiful Hymn. It really means something to take these words seriously. God help us to live a God glorifying life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Blessed are His hands

For they give everlasting life

We serve a Living God

Let it be known to the mountaintop

Everlasting peace

Let it be known to man

Those who seek His salvation are blessed

For He is.

Thank you Steve Miller.

I have been looking into the history of this hymn to give a short 5 mins talk on it then sing it at a Lunch Club I go to tomorrow and while I found some information on its history I wondered what the bad news was that prompted the originator A.J. Showalter to think along these lines and you have answered the question in my mind "That he had heard from two former students who had both lost their wives on the same day".

I will add this to my notes.

Thank you once more!

May the Lord bless you.

One afternoon in 1887, music teacher A. J. Showalter dismissed his class and returned to his rooming house in Hartsville, Alabama. There he found letters from 2 former students, each with a similar story. Both of them had lost their wives, and both wives had died on the same day. Showalter began writing letters of condolence. The Scripture that came to mind was Deuteronomy 33:26-27, the assurance of God's "everlasting arms" supporting us.

Then he wrote a 3rd letter, to Elisha Hoffman, a hymnwriter in Pennsylvania. Showalter suggested that Hoffman write a hymn on that theme. He even suggested the wording of the chorus. Hoffman responded quickly with 3 stanzas and Showalter supplied the music. - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton

It seems this hymn was produced by a life caring for others, having the living word including the riches of the Old Testament, and fellowship.

This hymn takes me back to East Griffin Holiness Church. I still get chills listening to it. Thank God.
