In the secret of His presence

1
In the secret of His presence
  How my soul delights to hide!
Oh, how precious are the lessons
  Which I learn at Jesus’ side!
Earthly cares can never vex me,
  Neither trials lay me low;
For when Satan comes to tempt me,
  To the secret place I go.
2
When my soul is faint and thirsty,
  ’Neath the shadow of His wing
There is cool and pleasant shelter,
  And a fresh and crystal spring;
And my Savior rests beside me,
  As we hold communion sweet;
If I tried, I could not utter
  What He says when thus we meet.
3
Only this I know: I tell Him
  All my doubts and griefs and fears;
Oh, how patiently He listens!
  And my drooping soul He cheers;
Do you think He ne’er reproves me?
  What a false friend He would be,
If He never, never told me
  Of the sins which He must see.
4
Would you like to know that sweetness
  Of the secret of the Lord?
Go and hide beneath His shadow;
  This shall then be your reward;
And whene’er you leave the silence
  Of that happy meeting-place,
By the Spirit bear the image
  Of the Master in your face.
(Repeat the last line of each stanza)

I would like to know that sweetness of the secret of the Lord. Lord, keep drawing me to that happy meeting place. Lord, draw me to hide in the secret place of the Lord, until it becomes the delight of my soul.

This hymn was sung in our various churches in past years and has always held a special place in my heart. Of course, you seldom if ever hear it anymore, but oh what wonderful words and encouragement to lean into our loving Saviour's breast! It came to my mind a few nights ago when laying sleepless in my bed and pondering a great sorrow but when I looked it up in the hymnbook I have at hand it was not there. Thanks to those who post these wonderful hymns and going back further, to those who penned them in the first place!

In the secret of His presence, in this silence, by the Spirit bearHis image in your face.

But we all with unveiled face, beholding and reflecting like a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed. Into the same image, from glory to glory, even as from the Lord Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18

his hymn is based on Psalm 91, which a lot of Christians are praying during this corona virus epidemic on the world.

Ellen Lakshmi Goreh, daughter of the Rev. Nehemiah Goreh, a Christian convert, a Brahmin of the highest class, was born. at Benares, Sept. 11, 1853. Her mother died in Dec. the same year, and the child was adopted first by a Mr. Smailes. Through the Mutiny in 1857 (India's first and failed war of independence against Britain) Mr. Smailes lost his property, and the child was then taken into the family of the Rev. W. T. Storrs and brought to England, where she was educated, and resided until 1880, when she returned to India to take up mission work with her own countrywomen. Through Miss F. R. Havergal's advice and influence Miss Goreh published From India's Coral Strand: Hymns of Christian Faith [1883]. The best known of these hymns is "In the secret of His Presence"

--John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology,

--------------------

The original last lines of the hymn say:

You must mind and bear the image

of the Master in your face.

She also wrote the hymn, "Lo, the Darkness Gathers Round Us", which is also fitting for these times.

While attending Prairie Bible Institute, and singing in the Radio Choir, this was one of the songs that left a deep impression on my whole being - and still does.

Mother used to sing this as a special number in church. I often accompanied her on the piano. It was one of her favourites! It's a favourite of mine too. There is nothing like experiencing the presence of Jesus!
