You have longed for sweet peace, and for faith to increase

E448
1
You have longed for sweet peace, and for faith to increase,
  And have earnestly, fervently prayed;
But you cannot have rest, or be perfectly blest,
  Until all on the altar is laid.

Is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid?
  Your heart, does the Spirit control?
You can only be blest and have peace and sweet rest,
    As you yield Him your body and soul.
2
Would you walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
  And have peace and contentment alway;
You must do His sweet will to be free from all ill;
  On the altar your all you must lay.
3
Oh, we never can know what the Lord will bestow
  Of the blessings for which we have prayed,
Till our body and soul He doth fully control,
  And our all on the altar is laid.
4
Who can tell all the love He will send from above!
  Oh, how happy our heart will be made!
Oh, what fellowship sweet we shall share at His feet,
  When our all on the altar is laid!

This hymn struck me when Bro Gbile Akanni sang it in"The making of God's Battle axe".

Verse 1 says it all- But you cannot have peace or be perfectly blessed Until all on the altar is laid.

How perfectly this teaches my heavy spirit what it was searching for, to sit at His feet in fellowship sweet is to give Him control of my body and soul. So many home truths encapsulated in an easy to remember format.

Thank you Lord for the way You catch our attention and invite us to lay all on Your alter and gain sweet peace - as You did for us in sacrificing Your all in Jesus’ sacrifice.

Like many other commenters, Great blessing of insights come to me through suddenly remembered hymns or Bible verses.

Words from this song sprung into my soul as I contemplated setting up a designated altar in my home. I am a Christian and honor the idea of ritual. I simply set out a bamboo serving tray and have been offering into it various notes or documents which represent what my prayers are laying aside for His working--HIs working for the Highest Good to His Will (not mine. )

Oh how sweet this song fills my heart. When am completely overcome by trials I remember the words in this song..... That I must lay my heart on the alter of sacrifice.

We longed for sweet peace, and faith to increase, and have earnestly and fervently prayed but cannot have them, until our all on the altar is laid.

Lord by your working and your moving in us, we cooperate with You to lay our all on the altar.

Thank You Lord.

Every time the cares of life and the deceitfulness of riches and the desire to run with the crowd and get all the pomp and pageantry of passing time compels me to throw in the towel, I am always reminded of this song. especially "You can only be blest and have peace and sweet rest,

As you yield Him your body and soul." This among many hymns I learnt growing up, weighed so strongly on my spirit and I have come to the end of vanity. Nothing else matters. If Christ is not in the souls. all dreams and earthly gains are mere phantasmagoria of nothingness

This song reminds me of when Abraham was called to bring Isaac as a sacrifice to God... Abraham and Sarah had been waiting for so long to have a child, yet when God asked for Isaac back, Abraham did not hesitate to obey God’s word. He laid everything on the altar before God, because he realized that not even his son truly belonged to him; only after he did this, he was blessed. How sweet is it that God paid the same price! Thank You, God, for sacrificing everything You had to purchase us. We love You, Lord Jesus!

This song brought a review of my life today as Bro Gbile Akanni raised it after one of his message I listened to - "The Making of His Battle Axe". Lord, help me to be resolute to make myself sacrificially available, that Your divine willingness may have its course in me.

It’s 3am and this song’s chorus stuck in my mind. I was troubled 😟. The words, I didn’t know, I just remember hearing it growing up from a child. But when I read them the song resonated. My spirit was a bit at ease. I’m glad I found the lyrics. Thanks 🙏🏽
