My hope is built on nothing less

1
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
  All other ground is sinking sand.
2
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
3
His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
4
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
In Him, my righteousness, alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

This hymn reminds me to only put my absolute trust in Christ our Savior and Lord, and not on princes (man). Christ is the solid rock which I stand, delivered my as a child, teenager, adult and will continue as He promised now and forever, Amen.

Am excited to pull the lyrics from your site, thank you!

Christ is a solid rock and He will not leave nor forsake us. I have discovered men will always fail but God never fails so I implore to alway cling on to Him.

I really appreciates God for the life of the composer of this song. It has severally healed my broken heart and always gives me assurance that it is only in Christ the Solid ground I can take my stand. It encourages me not to trust in what I can do, but what Christ will do in me through His precious blood. Thank You Jesus for saving me.

Very soon after being saved in 1983 I heard this song being sung and it impacted me deeply. I could only remember the refrain, so I was very delighted to find it on your site. I just can't stop singing it!

I was thank God for His grace in my life when this great hymn came to mind. It is sad to think of all the Christians will never hear these great old hymns.

The writer of the lyrics for this song was an Englishman, Edward Mote, raised by unbelieving, somewhat neglectful parents who ran a pub. According to an account of his early life, he is quoted as having said he did not "know there was a God."

Although receiving the Lord at the age of 18, he entered into the business of cabinet-making, following an apprenticeship. Later, at the age of 55, he became pastor of a Baptist church, serving there for more than 20 years.

This song (which sometimes features alternate lyrics) should be a great encouragement to us, as we can see what the chorus states: "On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand/All other ground is sinking sand." If we can truly enter into that sentiment, we will realize that we must rely on Christ alone. We will encounter many things in our human life, but whether family, a job, a home, education, human attainments--these things may not fully pass the test. They may be as "sinking sand." Only Christ is the true solid Rock on which we can stand, fellow brothers!

I understand this song was written after a true life experience.

If someone could help me with information/story behind this song...
