O Jesus, Jesus, dearest Lord!
Forgive me if I say,
For very love, Thy sacred name
A thousand times a day.
O Jesus, Lord, with me abide;
I rest in Thee, whate’er betide;
Thy gracious smile is my reward;
I love, I love Thee, Lord!
2
I love Thee so I know not how
My transports to control;
Thy love is like a burning fire
Within my very soul.
O Jesus, Lord, with me abide;
I rest in Thee, whate’er betide;
Thy gracious smile is my reward;
I love, I love Thee, Lord!
3
For Thou to me art all in all;
My honor and my wealth;
My heart’s desire, my body’s strength,
My soul’s eternal health.
O Jesus, Lord, with me abide;
I rest in Thee, whate’er betide;
Thy gracious smile is my reward;
I love, I love Thee, Lord!
4
Burn, burn, O love, within my heart,
Burn fiercely night and day,
Till all the dross of earthly loves
Is burned, and burned away.
O Jesus, Lord, with me abide;
I rest in Thee, whate’er betide;
Thy gracious smile is my reward;
I love, I love Thee, Lord!
5
O light in darkness, joy in grief,
O heaven’s life on earth;
Jesus, my love, my treasure, who
Can tell what Thou art worth?
O Jesus, Lord, with me abide;
I rest in Thee, whate’er betide;
Thy gracious smile is my reward;
I love, I love Thee, Lord!
6
What limit is there to this love?
Thy flight, where wilt Thou stay?
On, on! our Lord is sweeter far
Today than yesterday.
O Jesus, Lord, with me abide;
I rest in Thee, whate’er betide;
Thy gracious smile is my reward;
I love, I love Thee, Lord!

Burn, burn.. til all the dross of earthly love is burned away. I've sung this hymn many times but it is so real to me now! Love of anything or earthy... human.. that replaces or supercedes my love for my FIRST AND BEST LOVE.. JESUS, must be be burned away. Even the "good" &"normal" stuff is dross compared to Jesus, who lived, died, resurrected, ascended then came as the Life Giving Spirit to dwell in our spirit, to be our life, living and our everything!

This hymn has been riveted in my heart and mind, since I was a child. At age 80, Jesus is alive today. I know His presence is in my life. I am the son of Reverend William E Allen of Mansfield, Ohio.

Somehow the third verse of this hymn came to me this morning. We lost a family member this week. He was only 22 years old. Verse 3 gave me comfort. “ Oh light in darkness joy in grief, oh heavens light on earth. The Lords love is so strong it gives me joy even though I’m still in grief. This is the power of God. No unbeliever could ever understand this. Heavens light is Christ on this earth. He is the light in our darkest hour. Oh how He loves us and we can experience this great love.

This song truly is a treasure. This brother who wrote this shares about an intimate relationship of love with God. He keeps saying Lord abide in me. The more we know Christ the more we say abide with me. We must abide so He can abide. His abiding brings us more into His love. We then say “Oh Lord with me abide! ”. I like verse one where it says He is my reward. His very self is my reward!
