On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suff’ring and shame,
And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
The emblem of suff’ring and shame,
And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above,
To bear it to dark Calvary.
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above,
To bear it to dark Calvary.

In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see;
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.
A wondrous beauty I see;
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

I grew up in the small village of Pokagon, Michigan, where "The Old Rugged Cross", was first sung, by a choir of 5 and accompanied by a guitar, on June 7, 1913. (Wikipedia). The 1st Saturday of each month (in the Summer) people still gather, at the original church, and sing the hymns of old. As we approach the 100th year anniversary of the greatest gospel song ever written, the same common people, will gather to sing this beloved hymn.

The words and music are so real. It should be more frequently played for the salvation of man. These are days of trial for everyone. Such inspirational music is needed more.

Last night I cried myself to bed because of sins and failures. This morning this tune came to my head. I didn't know what it was, but because I am a music teacher, I knew it was in 3/4 and in the key of Bb. Searched the whole day and found it at last. God is so good. His grace is enough everyday.

I love this hymn. It was sung at my father's funeral. It is a reminder to us that no matter how rough life might seems to us if we take up our cross and follow boldly in the footsteps of our Lord and Saviour that one day we will exchange that old rugged cross for a crown.

I love this hymn a lot as I can feel the Lord's forgiveness even when we are a sinner.

This song really puts things in the proper perspective. What else matters? I think we should heed Paul's words and decide to know only Christ and Him crucified.

This hymn reminds me that I should give everything to Jesus to repay Him. This is our college hymn.
