O Jesus, I have promised

E465
1
O Jesus, I have promised
  To serve Thee to the end;
Be Thou forever near me,
  My Master and my Friend;
I shall not fear the battle
  If Thou art by my side,
Nor wander from the pathway
  If Thou wilt be my Guide.
2
Oh, let me feel Thee near me;
  The world is ever near;
I see the sights that dazzle,
  The tempting sounds I hear;
My foes are ever near me,
  Around me and within;
But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer,
  And shield my soul from sin.
3
Oh, let me hear Thee speaking,
  In accents clear and still,
Above the storms of passion,
  The murmurs of self-will;
Oh, speak to reassure me,
  To hasten, or control;
Oh, speak, and make me listen,
  Thou Guardian of my soul.
4
O Jesus, Thou hast promised
  To all who follow Thee
That where Thou art in glory
  There shall Thy servant be;
And Jesus, I have promised
  To serve Thee to the end;
Oh, give me grace to follow,
  My Master and my Friend.
5
Oh, let me see Thy footmarks,
  And in them plant mine own;
My hope to follow duly
  Is in Thy strength alone.
Oh, guide me, call me, draw me,
  Uphold me to the end;
And then to rest receive me,
  My Savior and my Friend.

This hymn came to me very early this morning, a hymn from my childhood. I am 77 years old and during this time of epidemic I need to express these words to God in a a renewed commitment to Him and a prayer for His guidance.

This is my “go to” hymn when everything seems grim and out of control. How lovely to hear from people round the world how much it means to them -what an encouragement -We are one... God’s family!

I am reading my prayers of the day and following a service for the day, at home by myself. I miss being able to sing hymns in church during the current measures we need to follow. So I have been going through a list of my favourite hymns, and singing out of tune by myself to all my favourites. Then when I came to this Oh Jesus I have promised, it lit me up, the sun suddenly shone through the blinds and a warm internal glow flowed through me. Always loved this hymn.

I remember singing this in my school assembly aged 9. For the first time I realised that the writer appeared to have a real and personal relationship with God. I wondered if this were possible or true but declared in my heart that if it were I wanted it too. Aged 18 and an atheist, God graciously revealed Himself to me. I knew my life could never be the same again and received Him as my Lord, Saviour and Friend.
