"Must I go, and empty-handed,"
Thus my dear Redeemer meet?
Not one day of service give Him,
Lay no trophy at His feet?
"Must I go, and empty-handed?"
Must I meet my Savior so?
Not one soul with which to greet Him:
Must I empty-handed go?
2
Not at death I shrink nor falter,
For my Savior saves me now;
But to meet Him empty-handed,
Thought of that now clouds my brow.
"Must I go, and empty-handed?"
Must I meet my Savior so?
Not one soul with which to greet Him:
Must I empty-handed go?
3
O the years in sinning wasted;
Could I but recall them now,
I would give them to my Savior,
To His will I'd gladly bow.
"Must I go, and empty-handed?"
Must I meet my Savior so?
Not one soul with which to greet Him:
Must I empty-handed go?
4
O ye saints, arouse, be earnest,
Up and work while yet 'tis day;
Ere the night of death o'ertake thee,
Strive for souls while still you may.
"Must I go, and empty-handed?"
Must I meet my Savior so?
Not one soul with which to greet Him:
Must I empty-handed go?

This calls for self reflection. I will do my best in winning souls. God has shown me so much love! I must work for Him!

That was a regular song at crusades and fellowship meetings across the country in the 1970s. Today’s church no longer sing such evangelical songs because sheep stealing instead of evangelism and soul winning have become the order in the church today.
We have diocesan evangelists retreat today. At about 4. 00 a. m the Holy Spirit inspired me to adopt “Must I go and empty handed “ as our theme song. I have not heard it sung in any church meeting in the last 25 years. It reminds me that something is not happening right in God’s church of our time. May soul winning return! May I not go empty handed to meet my Lord and Savior. Dear Lord, rekindle the revival and evangelistic fire 🔥 in me. LORD, lay some soul on my heart. Make me restless until a soul is won for your kingdom. Amen🙏.

I heard this song for the first time as a new convert in 1993. It touched me then and still touches my heart now. I am now a missionary Ghana, West Africa. Praise God for his Grace and mercy! To the man from Lagos who commented in this thread. Please sir, realize that God saves sinners who believe on Jesus Christ! He does not save those who forsake all their evil ways. Do you know anyone who has stopped sinning? Romans 3:28 “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. ” See also John 3:18, Romans 3:20, Gal 2:16, Titus 3:5, Eph 2:8, 9

The message of this hymn is always new, and serving as a great reminder of our mission here on earth. Jn 25:14 tell us indeed, that we all have a certain might, given according to our ability, whiçh must be put to the mission. A reminder of not letting down our guard. Greatest masterpiece.

We sang this song in the little Baptist Church I grew up in. I remember it was the one song We sang did it hurt my heart. I just couldn't imagine meeting Jesus face to face and not have a trophy not have a soul not having done anything in his name. He gave everything so that we could live and I wasted most of my life. But thank God for Grace thank God for mercy and he never gives up on us. I will not meet my savior empty-handed.

In 2014, I heard this song for the first time. I wept profusely because of my encounter via this song. My life took a different dimension altogether since that time till date. By God's mercy and Grace, I automatically became earnest and fervent in soul winning. This is almost 7yrs now but this song still reminds me of my consecration that day and my focus has not drifted a bit instead, I'm becoming more strategic, wise, fervent and very forward in the matter of winning souls and making disciples. God bless the composer through whom lives are still being blessed.
