Since Christ my soul from sin set free,
This life has been a joy to me;
And 'mid earth's sorrows and its woe,
'Tis joy my Jesus here to know.
O hallelujah, yes, 'tis joy!
For it is Christ that I enjoy!
On land or sea, what matters where?
Where Jesus is, my joy is there.

The earth was once a bitter place
Till Jesus showed His smiling face;
Now joy's begun within my soul,
'Twill last while endless ages roll.
O hallelujah, yes, 'tis joy!
For it is Christ that I enjoy!
On land or sea, what matters where?
Where Jesus is, my joy is there.

What matters where on earth we dwell?
On mountain top, or in the dell,
In cottage, or a mansion fair,
Where Jesus is, my joy is there.
O hallelujah, yes, 'tis joy!
For it is Christ that I enjoy!
On land or sea, what matters where?
Where Jesus is, my joy is there.

We are currently looking for assisted living for my aging parents whose health is failing. It is a difficult transition for them after living in their home for over 50 years. This song reminds me my joy and home is wherever Jesus is.
What matters where on earth we dwell?

In cottage, or a mansion fair,
Where Jesus is, my joy is there.

Charles J. Butler (USA 1860)—Butler, a Methodist, speaks of a voyage he took from his home, Camden, New Jersey, as a bachelor, to Britain around 1894, stating he roamed around the British Isles for 14 months through Scotland, Ireland, Britain, and Paris, dealing with ship stewards, street urchins, and visiting famous sites. He wrote about his trip in 1901. He later resided in Philadelphia and was a salesman and musician. He wrote “Heart Melodies # 3” with Charles Bentley (1897). He is possibly the listed secretary of the YMCA in Philadelphia in 1920.
Butter also wrote this hymn “Since Christ My Soul from Sin Set Free” which was one of the hymns selected for the memorial of a dear servant of the Lord celebrated today in the church in Newinton, Connecticut (3-06-22).
Ricky was a crazy lover of the Lord, an exceptional family man and dedicated doctor. He will be missed. The other hymn selected in his memorial titled “A Celebration of Life, ” was “Sweet Hour of Prayer. ” By William W. Walford.

Col. 1:10
To walk worthily of the Lord to please Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and growing by the full knowledge of God,
Col. 1:11
Being empowered with all power, according to the might of His glory, unto all endurance and long-suffering with joy,
With joy- in the following verses vv12-23 illustrate that Christ is our joy! By His becoming our redemption, transferring us into the light, qualifying us to partake of Him as our allotted portion, fulfilling God's economy in us by reconciling us that He gain the first place in us through His spreading Christ becomes our joy.
When we know that God's will is to spread Himself into us through the endurance of long-suffering we must then see who Christ Jesus is! Hence verses 12-23. Christ is our joy. He is our grace. He is the power of all power that empowers us to go through suffering that God may gain us!
This is why Paul says in v24a: I now rejoice in my suffering
