O happy day that fixed my choice

1
O happy day that fixed my choice
On Thee, my Savior and my God!
Well may this glowing heart rejoice,
And tell its raptures all abroad.

Happy day, happy day,
When Jesus washed my sins away!
He taught me how to watch and pray,
And live rejoicing every day;
Happy day, happy day,
  When Jesus washed my sins away!
2
'Tis done—the great transaction's done;
I am my Lord's, and He is mine;
He drew me and I followed on,
Rejoiced to own the call divine.
3
Now rest, my long-divided heart,
Fixed on this blissful center, rest;
Here have I found a nobler part,
Here heav'nly pleasures fill my breast.
4
High heav'n that hears the solemn vow,
That vow renewed shall daily hear!
Till in life's latest hour I bow,
And bless, in death, a bond so dear.

Philip Doddridge was the youngest of 20 children! He was considered too sickly to live. His parents died when he was only a teenager, but he was taken in by a minister who nurtured him in spiritual matters. Doddridge became a pastor, an educator, a hymnwriter, and an author. He wrote his hymns to illustrate his sermons and taught them to his congregation after he finished preaching.

---------------------------

The original last line of stanza #2 above says:

Charmed to confess the voice divine.

----------------------------------

There is an additional stanza following stanza #1:

O happy bond, that seals my vows

To Him Who merits all my love!

Let cheerful anthems fill His house,

While to that sacred shrine I move.

What a God honoring praise! I first heard this song at a father/daughter reatreat and just found it on this site. What a blessed addition to our family worship!

Very Christo-centric song, I love it. God, Your name shall ever be praised.

The Spirit of God brought this beautiful hymn to me this morning, and I thank God for this hymn is to me an assurance that I am the Lord's and He is mine. Glory and Honor and Praises and Power and Majesty be unto our Lord and God, the ALMIGHTY. May the Grace and Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Shalom.

I never grew up with my father. Now I do understand what it means to have a father as God has been the utmost Father to me. He made provision for my sins to be erased long before I was born so that I could be reconciled to Him. Today the song came to my mind and later on in the day a total stranger came up to me and sang it. My heart is no longer divided but at peace, total rest, knowing that I am His and He is mine.
