Although I received Jesus at the age of 8, it took me until my late 60s to believe at the heart level, that Jesus is my friend. Sad to say, I am not the only Christian who takes such a long time to have this deep conviction.
I can't go by my feelings to know if Jesus cares for me. I can think about Jesus on the cross. He & the Father proved His love !!!

Each time I meditate on the perfect love of God, it gladdens my heart. God is so loving that He accepts even the once worst sinner like myself, who has come to Him by His saving grace.
