O Jesus, I have promised

E465
1
O Jesus, I have promised
  To serve Thee to the end;
Be Thou forever near me,
  My Master and my Friend;
I shall not fear the battle
  If Thou art by my side,
Nor wander from the pathway
  If Thou wilt be my Guide.
2
Oh, let me feel Thee near me;
  The world is ever near;
I see the sights that dazzle,
  The tempting sounds I hear;
My foes are ever near me,
  Around me and within;
But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer,
  And shield my soul from sin.
3
Oh, let me hear Thee speaking,
  In accents clear and still,
Above the storms of passion,
  The murmurs of self-will;
Oh, speak to reassure me,
  To hasten, or control;
Oh, speak, and make me listen,
  Thou Guardian of my soul.
4
O Jesus, Thou hast promised
  To all who follow Thee
That where Thou art in glory
  There shall Thy servant be;
And Jesus, I have promised
  To serve Thee to the end;
Oh, give me grace to follow,
  My Master and my Friend.
5
Oh, let me see Thy footmarks,
  And in them plant mine own;
My hope to follow duly
  Is in Thy strength alone.
Oh, guide me, call me, draw me,
  Uphold me to the end;
And then to rest receive me,
  My Savior and my Friend.

When John Bode served the parish at Castle Camps, near Cambridge, England, in the middle of the 19th century, he had the privilege of officiating at the confirmation of his daughter and 2 sons. This hymn was written specifically for this occasion, and originally the 1st line was, "O Jesus, we have promised" because all 3 children were making this dedication of themselves to the Lord. - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton

After reaching workplace and making a cup of tea, this song came into my mind and I started humming thinking of my good old days at school. Since I forgot the lyrics I seached Internet and here I am with this beautiful word that blesses me. Thanks a lot for whoever put this song on the net for simple page flip. Remember God takes cares of everybody both good and bad. Thank You Almighty God. God Bless everyone. Amen.

We were making giving pledges in church for 2013 and this is a perfect one to tell God what we are promising. May God help us fulfill our vows as a church and as individuals. Amen.

On reading a friend's sermon this morning it led me to search out this hymn and really listen. I was then reminded of the beauty and simplicity (despite the challenges) of what I am called to. Thanks be to God for faithful friends who in small things can provide such encouragement on the journey.

I was doing my morning devotion when the song came across my mind, I quickly searched on the internet and found this.

Thanks for making this available, may God reward you richly.

By the way a lot of Nigerians use this website, that's quite commendable.
