Thy way, not mine, O Lord

C295 E393 K295 T393
1
Thy way, not mine, O Lord,
  However dark it be;
Lead me by Thine own hand,
  Choose out the Path for me.
2
Smooth let it be, or rough,
  It will be still the best;
Winding or straight it leads
  Right onward to Thy rest.
3
I dare not choose my lot;
  I would not if I might:
Choose Thou for me, my God,
  So shall I walk aright.
4
Take Thou my cup, and it
  With joy or sorrow fill,
As best to Thee may seem;
  Choose Thou my good and ill.
5
Choose Thou for me my friends,
  My sickness or my health.
Choose Thou my cares for me,
  My poverty or wealth.
6
Not mine, not mine the choice,
  In things both great and small;
Be Thou my guide, my strength,
  My wisdom and my all.

Thy way not mine oh Lord. Thy rule oh Christ begin.

The hymn tells me I cannot do anything on my own so I have to commit my way to the Lord and continue to accept and appreciate Him alone

... a highly soulful hymn that resonates and ignites the spirit... it releases one from the tensions of darkness because the Lord has taken over... The battle is truly the Lords.. just cast burdens upon him and look up to him....

Kofi Nkrumah Mensah

This hymn reminds me to entirely trust and allow the Holy Spirit to lead me on the path of God’s will. My Father in heaven means me well, I only need to trust Him always.

Just looking up to God to order my steps and all that He has for me.

Bonar was a Scottish preacher and hymn writer. He was one of the more respected and influential leaders of the revolt against the established state church of Scotland and associated himself with the Free Church Movement. He was a noted evangelical preacher and author as well as a hymn writer. One of his tracts, "Believe and Live," reached a circulation of 1 million copies and was a favorite with Queen Victoria. He began to write hymns to inspire the young people out of their complacency. Up until this time the Scottish Presbyterian Church only sang psalms. He wrote more than 600 hymns of which 100 are still in common use. His hymns cover a wide spectrum including truth, praise, service, consecration, and experience. Bonar lived a life of service, suffering and humility. He bore the loss of 5 children. He desired the Lord to be exalted, and he requested that no biography be written about him. - Songs of the Spirit by Martin

There is an additional stanza following stanza #3 above:

The kingdom that I seek

is Thine; so let the way

that leads to it be Thine,

else I must surely stray.

This hymn is sweetly comforting. It reminds me that everything I pass through, great or small, is ordered by the Father's hand, and I wouldn't have it any other way. It reminds me of Psalm 16:6 "The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places, a goodly heritage."
