My hope is built on nothing less

1
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
  All other ground is sinking sand.
2
When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
3
His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
4
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
In Him, my righteousness, alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

One early morning, a 19C workman was making his way along Holborn Hill, London. He had recently found peace for his troubled soul, after years of wayward and careless living, and as he walked to his work in the early hours of that quiet morning, before the great city yet awakened, he began to meditate on the riches of redeeming grace, which had obtained for him eternal security in Christ Jesus. Such peace of mind he had never before experienced, and in the ecstasy of this newfound joy, involuntarily there came to him these words:

“On Christ the solid Rock I stand,

All other ground is sinking sand. ”

Jotting down the two lines on a piece of paper he felt that the message was God-given. All that day as he labored at his carpenter’s bench, the one thought upper-most in his mind seemed to be assurance and security in his Savior. That night before going to sleep, he wrote down on a piece of paper the greater part of the hymn we know today so well; the remaining lines were completed the following day.

The name of the writer is Edward Mote. Soon after his conversion, Mr. Mote, while still exercising his profession as a carpenter, turned his attention to the Lord’s work, and some years later he became pastor of a Baptist Church at Horsham, Sussex, where he continued to minister for more than 20 years.

In November, 1874, when Mr. Mote was 78 years old, his health began to decline but as the strength of this beloved saint failed, his confidence in God seem to be renewed.

“I think I’m going to heaven, ” he said; “yes, I am nearing port. The truth I have preached I am now living upon, and they will do to die upon. Ah! The precious blood! The precious blood which takes away all our sins; it is this which makes peace with God. ” And thus into quiet confidence he passed away, trusting only in the merit of the precious blood of which he sang.

Near the pulpit, in the church at Horsham where he ministered, is a tablet to the memory of Mr. Mote which bears his testimony:

In loving memory of MR. EDWARD MOTE,

Who fell asleep in Jesus November 13, 1874, aged 77 years.

“For 26 years the beloved Pastor of his church, preaching Christ and Him crucified, and all the sinner can need, and all the saint can desire. ”

The verse 2 of this hymn keeps me going. There are actually time when I think God is not there but my anchor holds on to His promises knowing He is Jehovah Nisi, the one who is ever present in times of trouble and this keeps me going. Here is verse 2:

When darkness veils His lovely face,

I rest on His unchanging grace;

In every high and stormy gale,

My anchor holds within the veil.

My mind was beginning to fill with fear and worry this afternoon. Then this song came to me: On Christ the Solid Rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand... Thank you Lord for reminding me who to turn to when the storms of life are tossing me all over the place. You are truly Jehovah Shalom, God of Peace!
