Jesus, Thou Joy of loving hearts,
Thou Fount of life, Thou Light of men,
From the best bliss that earth imparts,
We turn unfilled to Thee again.
Thou Fount of life, Thou Light of men,
From the best bliss that earth imparts,
We turn unfilled to Thee again.
2
Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood;
Thou savest those that on Thee call;
To them that seek Thee, Thou art good,
To them that find Thee, all in all!
Thou savest those that on Thee call;
To them that seek Thee, Thou art good,
To them that find Thee, all in all!
3
We taste Thee, O Thou living Bread,
And long to feast upon Thee still;
We drink of Thee, the Fountain-head,
And thirst our souls from Thee to fill!
And long to feast upon Thee still;
We drink of Thee, the Fountain-head,
And thirst our souls from Thee to fill!
4
Our restless spirits yearn for Thee,
Where’er our changeful lot is cast;
Glad when Thy gracious smile we see,
Blest, when our faith can hold Thee fast.
Where’er our changeful lot is cast;
Glad when Thy gracious smile we see,
Blest, when our faith can hold Thee fast.
5
O Lord, be Thou our strength and stay!
Make all our moments calm and bright,
Chase all dark thoughts of sin away,
Shed o’er us here Thy holy light.
Make all our moments calm and bright,
Chase all dark thoughts of sin away,
Shed o’er us here Thy holy light.

Henry Percy Smith composed the music for this hymn. He was born December 1825, Malta and died January 28, 1898, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England.
Smith attended Balliol College, Oxford, and was ordained an Anglican priest in 1850. He was a curate at Eversley (1849-51), then received an appointment as perpetual curate at St. Michael’s Yorktown, Camberley, Surrey, in 1851. He only stayed until 1868, though, when he became vicar of Great Barton in Suffolk.

This hymn was translated into English by Ray Palmer (1808-1887). His most famous hymn is “My Faith looks up to Thee”(429) and is in the section of longings. He wrote that hymn in 1830 fresh out of college.
This hymn, ”Jesus Thou Joy of Loving Hearts” is one of the oldest hymns written by a nobleman Bernard of Clairvaux in the 12C and was translated into English by Palmer in 1858.
Ray Palmer’s education is extensive. A graduate of Yale College in New Haven. Also He pastored the Central Congregational Church in Albany NY and was later appointed as Corresponding Secretary to the American Congregational Union in NY in 1865 until He retired in 1887.
Most of Palmer’s hymns are considered superior to all other hymns in American origin. They are a combination of though, poetry and devotion.
