Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before.
Christ, the royal Master,
Leads against the foe;
Forward into battle,
See, His banners go!
Marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus,
Going on before.
Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers,
On to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver
At the shout of praise:
Brothers, lift your voices,
Loud your anthems raise!
Moves the Church of God:
Brothers, we are treading
Where the saints have trod;
We are not divided,
All one Body we—
One in faith and Spirit,
One eternally.
Kingdoms rise and wane;
But the Church of Jesus
Constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never
’Gainst the Church prevail;
We have Christ’s own promise,
Which can never fail.
Join our happy throng;
Blend with ours your voices
In the triumph song.
Glory, laud and honor
Unto Christ, the King;
This through countless ages
Men and angels sing.

Tears flow as I remember as a 7 year old, 66 years ago, at a boys camp up north when someone donated the money for me to go to camp where we learned this inspiring hymn as we lined up and marched into the cafeteria. Today I am involved in trying to hold our church together as one of these youtube videos gave me strength to speak to our congregation at tonight's annual meeting. PRAISE THE LORD FOR HIS SPIRITUAL SUSTENANCE!

The Redemption Hymnal changes line three and chorus to "looking unto Jesus, who is gone before" which is okay but the mention and the understanding of the cross of Christ are very significant. Please read what Paul says regarding God's means of salvation. 1 Corinthians 1; 18-24 "The preaching of Christ crucified is the power of God to change all," Thanks.

This actually used to be the song I sang when I was drunk & didn't know the LORD. Praise be to GOD our almighty Father that even though I was denying Him, He knew me well and in the middle of some of the heights of my fallen existence, it was the songs of the Lord I that were on my lips. PTL 🙌

This hymn encourages the disciples to remain faithful in following the Lord inspite of whatever adverse circumstances we may be facing. Victory is certain in the Lord!

Thank you for this site of lovely Hymns. I am playing them for my mum who is 102 years old and ill. She loves the Lord and is waiting for him to call her home where she will be free of earthly constraints.

Very powerful inspirational song! One of my favorite hymns with great encouraging words, first heard it when I was about 11 years.... and I immediately fell in love with it!
