Master, speak! Thy servant heareth

E808 T808
1
Master, speak! Thy servant heareth,
  Waiting for Thy gracious word,
Longing for Thy voice that cheereth
  Master, let it now be heard.
I am list’ning, Lord, for Thee;
What hast Thou to say to me?
2
Often through my heart is pealing
  Many another voice than Thine,
Many an unwilled echo stealing
  From the walls of this Thy shrine.
Let Thy longed-for accents fall;
Master, speak! and silence all.
3
Master, speak! though least and lowest,
  Let me not unheard depart;
Master, speak! for oh, Thou knowest
  All the yearning of my heart.
Knowest all its truest need;
Speak! and make me blest indeed.
4
Master, speak! and make me ready,
  When Thy voice is truly heard,
With obedience glad and steady,
  Still to follow every word
I am listening, Lord, for Thee:
Master, speak, oh, speak to me!
5
Speak to me by name, O Master,
  Let me know it is to me;
Speak, that I may follow faster,
  With a step more firm and free,
Where the Shepherd leads the flock
In the shadow of the Rock!

Every time this hymnal comes up on the screen in my church. I chant with all the strength in me, as it feels like direct communication with heaven.

Just been meditating on the Transfiguration Matt 17:5

This is my beloved Son, with whom I'm well pleased; listen to Him

Then this hymn came to mind - it is so fitting!! Amazing!!

You have touched my heart with the comments about your pastor.

The lesson for me is that even as we worship, we are leaving a permanent mark on those we lead in worship, and that our worship is being observed.

I have just dreamt about this song. And I was singing it with a number of colleagues at work.

What a beautiful hymn, in the midst of all that is happening around us Master speak to us. Heal the world and Restore your people. Speak one word and Covid-19 is deafeted! Master speak we are listening. Give us your peace Lord.

As I started my devotions this morning this hymn came to mind. It reminded me of my pastor 55 years ago who would kneel behind the lectern while we sang this. How he longed for the Master to speak through him. I am still listening.
