I’m pressing on the upward way

1
I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Lord, lift me up, and let me stand
By faith on Canaan’s tableland;
A higher plane than I have found,
  Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
2
My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.
3
I want to live above the world,
Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.
4
I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till rest I’ve found,
“Lord, lead me on to higher ground.”

There is no doubt that the composer of the song sought and obtained the anointing of God. The anointing of God is on this wonderful song - the various testimonies are evidences! All Christians, especially ministers of God, must always seek the face of God through prayers, fasting and meditation before any presentation or ministration. When we do this, our ministrations shall cause dry bones to rise again, sinners shall be convicted and saved, backsliders restored, the oppressed delivered, the sick healed, our land (and Church) revived and righteousness shall reign. So shall it be, in Jesus' name. (Amen)

This hymn has encouraged me so much, especially when I want to minister the word of God to people. Some times the devil wants to instil fear in me, this song will lift me to a state of fearlessness. Thank God for the composer.

In spite of all I may be passing through, this song always gives me a lot of courage to move on in my pilgrim's journey. It's so inspiring. My prayer is that God will indeed plant my feet on higher ground in this planet earth, then in heaven not only to catch the gleam of glory but to also dwell in there for ever and ever with my Lord Jesus. Amen

As l listen to this beautiful piece of music, it brings me back to the days when I used to worship in the little country church in the island of Jamaica. Oh this wonderful hymn was a blessing then and is still blessing me. Thank God for the writer who was inspired by the Holy Spirit to bless so many thousands of people over the years.

What does "by faith on Canaan's tableland" mean?

I like this song, Wonderful song.

To be in the spirit is the key, the secret. In the spirit we will experience many wonderful things of Christ because we have crossed the Jordan and entered into Canaan. When we are in the spirit, we are in the rest, and we are in the Holy of Holies. Therefore, we must always renounce the natural man, the outer man. For example, many times in the Lord's work I was tempted by the enemy to quarrel with others. On those occasions I felt that my reason was right, that the case was mine, and that I had the doctrine to support me. Yet while I was trying to speak, something deep within restricted me and stopped me. In order to go along with that deep feeling, I had to drop my quarreling. Consequently, it seemed that I had nothing to say. But I can testify that every time I went along with the spirit, there was victory. If we take care of our spirit, the mighty One in our spirit will be our strength. We will be transcendent and victorious over many things. When we come to the meetings, we will come with many items of Christ to contribute, either in prayer, singing, giving a testimony, or speaking a short word. Philippians 4:13 says, "I am able to do all things in Him who empowers me." But where does Christ empower us? He empowers us in our spirit. Our mind is the stronghold and the open gate for the enemy, but our spirit is the base for the Lord to do His work. Thus, when we go along with the mind, we are defeated, even though we may be doing something good. But if we go along with the spirit, we will be victorious. We will be on a high mountain, on higher ground, and, in the words of a hymn, "on Canaan's tableland" (Hymns, #396). We will be in the heavens and will be transcendent.
