I’m pressing on the upward way

1
I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Lord, lift me up, and let me stand
By faith on Canaan’s tableland;
A higher plane than I have found,
  Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
2
My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.
3
I want to live above the world,
Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.
4
I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till rest I’ve found,
“Lord, lead me on to higher ground.”

God has given me many "songs of rejoicing in the night" (Job 35:10) and most mornings wakes me with a song of His glory. Some months ago the Holy Spirit reminded me of this beautiful hymn from my childhood 50 years ago and I was SO touched. But I got distracted and for awhile could not remember the song. But I kept asking God to remind me again by His Spirit, which He did last week. He's never late! It is a perfect prayer and tears always fall as I sing it. The author, Johnson Oatman, is a blessing to us, for these anointed words speak of our hearts' cry to God! We are SO BLESSED to have our loving Daddy God, precious Savior Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit to lift us into His Presence with these lovely, inspirational hymns. Hallelujah!!

P.S. Nicolettefaith of Trinidad & Tobago: God bless you (and all other commenters)! T&T is my birthplace.

My heart has no desire to stay where Doubts arise and Fears dismay.

Lord lift me up plant my feet on higher ground!

Sometimes it's so comfortable to stay in that awful condition in our hearts for some it's all we know and change is scary but we need to press on by faith the first part is no longer desiring to stay in this dreadful position. I don't care how comfortable it is, as long as we are down there we are fair game to all the darts of the enemy. He doesn't even have to throw things at us he could just walk over and kick us.

Lord lift me up! Let me staind By Faith on Canaan's table land.

Lord plant my feet on higer ground!

Finally willing to leave this trench of doubt and fear and be a little uncomfortable as I press on by faith!

This powerful hymn reminds me of my high school years when I felt everything possible. I still do. Amen.

To be in the spirit is the key, the secret. In the spirit we will experience many wonderful things of Christ because we have crossed the Jordan and entered into Canaan. When we are in the spirit, we are in the rest, and we are in the Holy of Holies. Therefore, we must always renounce the natural man, the outer man. For example, many times in the Lord's work I was tempted by the enemy to quarrel with others. On those occasions I felt that my reason was right, that the case was mine, and that I had the doctrine to support me. Yet while I was trying to speak, something deep within restricted me and stopped me. In order to go along with that deep feeling, I had to drop my quarreling. Consequently, it seemed that I had nothing to say. But I can testify that every time I went along with the spirit, there was victory. If we take care of our spirit, the mighty One in our spirit will be our strength. We will be transcendent and victorious over many things. When we come to the meetings, we will come with many items of Christ to contribute, either in prayer, singing, giving a testimony, or speaking a short word. Philippians 4:13 says, "I am able to do all things in Him who empowers me." But where does Christ empower us? He empowers us in our spirit. Our mind is the stronghold and the open gate for the enemy, but our spirit is the base for the Lord to do His work. Thus, when we go along with the mind, we are defeated, even though we may be doing something good. But if we go along with the spirit, we will be victorious. We will be on a high mountain, on higher ground, and, in the words of a hymn, "on Canaan's tableland" (Hymns, #396). We will be in the heavens and will be transcendent.
