I’m pressing on the upward way

1
I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”
  Lord, lift me up, and let me stand
By faith on Canaan’s tableland;
A higher plane than I have found,
  Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
2
My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where these abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.
3
I want to live above the world,
Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled;
For faith has caught the joyful sound,
The song of saints on higher ground.
4
I want to scale the utmost height
And catch a gleam of glory bright;
But still I’ll pray till rest I’ve found,
“Lord, lead me on to higher ground.”

Ever refreshing, soul comforting, spirit lifting hymn. Will never forget the first time I heard this song. It was a glorious experience.

I claim this song in the lives of Chibueze, Uchechukwu, Samuel & Rebekah

This hymn is an old favourite of mine because, in singing it, I became aware of a higher, inner spiritual realm: that realm that we long to move up into. I thank God that the way up is still open as we continue our climb.

A line or two of this hymn has been going through my mind all week. So glad to find the words here.

Enjoyed listening to the music too.

Thanks.

I woke up with this hymn on my mind, I just had to find the words to it. I see that the Father wants me to gain higher ground, to strive towards the mark set before me. And indeed He wants this for all His children.

Indeed, it was written out of a deep revelation. Every moment of my life I reflect on the lyrics of the song it does reminds of what the Bible says concerning us in Matthew 5:14-16. We ought to really strive to gain new heights to throughly represent God as His image. May God bless the publisher of this site.

A real deep heart touching song. Sang today at a funeral service of songs in honor of mama Altadena in Yola, Nigeria.

This hymn is so powerful, it's very hard for me to shed tears, but any time I sing this song tears flow through my cheek. God, I bless Your name.

This hymn brings to mind the need to always looking onto God for a greater achievement each day of our lives until we reach the finish line of the race set before us as an heavenly pilgrimage.

To be in the spirit is the key, the secret. In the spirit we will experience many wonderful things of Christ because we have crossed the Jordan and entered into Canaan. When we are in the spirit, we are in the rest, and we are in the Holy of Holies. Therefore, we must always renounce the natural man, the outer man. For example, many times in the Lord's work I was tempted by the enemy to quarrel with others. On those occasions I felt that my reason was right, that the case was mine, and that I had the doctrine to support me. Yet while I was trying to speak, something deep within restricted me and stopped me. In order to go along with that deep feeling, I had to drop my quarreling. Consequently, it seemed that I had nothing to say. But I can testify that every time I went along with the spirit, there was victory. If we take care of our spirit, the mighty One in our spirit will be our strength. We will be transcendent and victorious over many things. When we come to the meetings, we will come with many items of Christ to contribute, either in prayer, singing, giving a testimony, or speaking a short word. Philippians 4:13 says, "I am able to do all things in Him who empowers me." But where does Christ empower us? He empowers us in our spirit. Our mind is the stronghold and the open gate for the enemy, but our spirit is the base for the Lord to do His work. Thus, when we go along with the mind, we are defeated, even though we may be doing something good. But if we go along with the spirit, we will be victorious. We will be on a high mountain, on higher ground, and, in the words of a hymn, "on Canaan's tableland" (Hymns, #396). We will be in the heavens and will be transcendent.
