Before the throne of God above
I have a strong, a perfect plea;
A great High Priest, whose Name is Love,
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
I have a strong, a perfect plea;
A great High Priest, whose Name is Love,
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
2
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart;
I know that while with God He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.
My name is written on His heart;
I know that while with God He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair,
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look, and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look, and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin.
4
Because the sinless Savior died,
My sinful soul is counted free;
For God, the Just, is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.
My sinful soul is counted free;
For God, the Just, is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.
5
Behold Him there, the risen Lamb!
My perfect, spotless Righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace.
My perfect, spotless Righteousness,
The great unchangeable I AM,
The King of glory and of grace.
6
One with Himself, I cannot die;
My soul is purchased by His blood;
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ, my Savior and my God.
My soul is purchased by His blood;
My life is hid with Christ on high,
With Christ, my Savior and my God.

In the third verse, despair is mentioned as a device used by the enemy to use our own personal doubts and fears to feel weak and hopeless. I treasure these words because they remind me there is no despair with the risen Jesus. He can and does wipe away the darkness within me.

There is another tune; a modern setting by Vikki Cook. It is published in several hymnals. I would guess that many folks think this is a new hymn.

God was moved with love to send His Son to die for us, and Ephesians mentions that we are saved by grace, but the foundation of our salvation is righteousness. Because of God's righteousness, even if He stopped loving us, or decided to withhold His grace, He is bound by His righteousness to forgive us.
We sinned, and because of God's righteousness, God could not forgive us.
He died, and because of God's righteousness, God *must* forgive us.
The gospel is the power of God unto salvation, because the righteousness of God is revealed in it.
