I stand amazed in the presence
Of Jesus the Nazarene,
And wonder how He could love me,
A sinner condemned, unclean.
Of Jesus the Nazarene,
And wonder how He could love me,
A sinner condemned, unclean.
How marvelous! How wonderful!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful!
Is my Savior’s love for me!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful!
Is my Savior’s love for me!

For me it was in the garden,
He prayed: “Not my will, but Thine.”
He had no tears for His own griefs,
But sweat-drops of blood for mine.
He prayed: “Not my will, but Thine.”
He had no tears for His own griefs,
But sweat-drops of blood for mine.

In pity angels beheld Him,
And came from the world of light
To strengthen Him in the sorrows
He bore for my soul that night.
And came from the world of light
To strengthen Him in the sorrows
He bore for my soul that night.
4
He took my sins and my sorrows,
He made them His very own;
He bore the burden to Calv’ry,
And suffered, and died alone.
He made them His very own;
He bore the burden to Calv’ry,
And suffered, and died alone.

When with the ransomed in glory
His face I at last shall see,
’Twill be my joy through the ages
To sing of His love for me.
His face I at last shall see,
’Twill be my joy through the ages
To sing of His love for me.

In the early 1900s, Charles H. Gabriel (1856-1932) became a renowned gospel music writer. He wrote the words and music for many of the hymns used by evangelists such as Billy Sunday. Charles’ hymns had an emphasis on gospel music. In the 1800s hymns were more meditative and theological. But with the revival work of D. L. Moody and Billy Sunday, Christians learned to love songs that were more informal and easy to memorize.
Charles Gabriel is credited for having written between 7000-8000 songs. He wrote tunes for hymns as well, including “His Eye is on the Sparrow” and “Will the Circle be Unbroken? ”
He taught himself to play in his family’s reed organ and never had any formal music training. Some of his music stemmed from his personal struggles, including his father‘s death. His mother would challenge him to write his own words and music after finishing his farm work each day. In response to his son having become a renowned songwriter, she said, “I would rather have him write a song that will help someone than see him become President of the United States. ” her hopes for her son came true, and Charles became known as the “Master of Missionary Music. ” Gabriel lead worship for Billy Sunday encouraging listeners to hear the “Macedonian Call” (a call by the apostle Paul in Acts encouraging a Macedonian to join him in the to preaching of the gospel). One common thread throughout many of Gabriel‘s lyrics is the high-honor and sense of indebtedness to spread the good news of the gospel.

There is a certain humbling purity in these words which even after 60 years continue to bring tears of joy and repentance to this old man

Sing along! Cry for JOY along!
When you hit a certain age and spiritual depth, suddenly the urge to "shout and dance and jump a pew" is overtaken with the rich humbling reality of the depth of God's Love through the cross. So your response may be to just sit, stand, fall on your face, and weep in sheer joy!

What a joy to hear these comments from around the world! I am putting together some hymns to play to, and sing with residents in a retirement home whether they have faith in Jesus or not, this hymn will speak the gospel to them!
I gave my life to Jesus when I was 12, I am now 87 and recently lost a leg but I can still get around in a wheelchair and talk to people about Jesus. Praise the Lord!
