The Great Physician now is near,
The sympathizing Jesus;
He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,
Oh, hear the voice of Jesus!
Sweetest note in seraph song;
Sweetest name on mortal tongue;
Sweetest carol ever sung:
Jesus, blessed Jesus!
2
Your many sins are all forgiv’n,
Oh, hear the voice of Jesus;
The veil ’twixt you and God is riven,
Redemption wrought by Jesus.
Sweetest note in seraph song;
Sweetest name on mortal tongue;
Sweetest carol ever sung:
Jesus, blessed Jesus!
3
All glory to the dying Lamb!
I now believe in Jesus;
I love the blessed Savior’s name,
I love the name of Jesus.
Sweetest note in seraph song;
Sweetest name on mortal tongue;
Sweetest carol ever sung:
Jesus, blessed Jesus!
4
His name dispels my guilt and fear,
No other name but Jesus;
Oh, how my soul delights to hear
The precious name of Jesus!
Sweetest note in seraph song;
Sweetest name on mortal tongue;
Sweetest carol ever sung:
Jesus, blessed Jesus!

I love this hymn very much especially the Hausa version so I decided to look up the English version online. I think I'll need a constant reminder that God through Jesus is the the "Great Physician".

My husband called Friday alarmed because of something in his eye that hurt. I came home, flushed it with eyedrops four times and called the doctor. We went in and opthmalogist put several drops including dye in his eye and looked with ultraviolet lights, prescribed ointment and said it was an abrasion & patched husband's eye. I applied the ointment four times as instructed, but husband continued to feel something in his eye. Last night we prayed again for him and our daughter prayed specifically for it as we left her home. In the night a foreign gritty object moved to the corner of his eye and his eye is healed this morning. This song the Great Physician came to mind first thing upon waking and praising our Lord. He is and always will be the sympathizing Jesus, our Great Physician. All praise to Him who sees and knows and heals all.

My friend who was sick came into my room and requested that I sing this hymn. I sang the hymn and to my surprise, he was healed. Jesus is the sweetest name ever sung.

Repeating this stanza presents the feeling of the Holy Spirit around me as I sing it.
It comforts me a forgiven sinner that I was.
