A mighty Fortress is our God,
A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still,
His Kingdom is forever.
No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still,
His Kingdom is forever.

I love this hymn. I love all the the old hymns and know them all. I feel so good to hear and sing them to myself. Everyday I have a song in my heart to sing. it makes me feel good.

This time of trial and confusion, sickness and weaknesses, darkness and struggle, this hymn means so much. In this darkness Christ becomes the only light. "This is good, and pleases God our Savior."

After posting his 95 theses on the door of Wittenberg's Castle Church in October, 1517, Martin Luther faced many years of trials and persecution. And during the years of the ensuing Protestant Reformation, Luther came to know better than most the gracious power of God's sheltering hand. He confidently stepped forward to defend the truth he found in God's Word, despite excommunication from the Roman church, continual threats to his life and freedom, and times of intense spiritual battle.
In the comforting words of Psalm 46, Luther found the inspiration for this hymn that would become the battle cry of the Protestant Reformation. Many who suffered for their faith during that time found solid comfort in Luther's words of faith and praise. "A mighty fortress is our God!" - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton

This hymn was sung at the funeral of American president Dwight Eisenhower at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, March 1969.
It may be that General Eisenhower was strengthened by this song during World War II, though he was not religious at that time, but he had Godly parents.

Amazing composition! God is good, God is great.....
The protestant reformation movement was built on three main tenets:
1. The re-establishment o the scriptures.
2. Clarifying the means of salvation.
3. The restoration of congregational singing.

A hymn that is both Inspiring and touching many lives...brought us closer to our God our mighty fortress. Our forefathers come from afar to plant churches a few centuries ago in this land. But now the younger generation hardly remember what our forefathers were doing. We really need to see God move again in our land. Forever He is our mighty fortress.God has mercy upon us.

This particular song is a soul inspiring hymn that whenever I hear it, I tend to stop whatever I'm doing and meditate on. This is a song that is sang whenever we have hymnology and one of the biggest hymns in the Presbyterianism. I like it so much.

Both the melody and words are beautiful. Martin Luther lived in a terrible time in history where if one did not agree with the King or Queen, he could be beheaded or burned for their faith. God blessed Luther with the boldness to declare the truth of God's Word in a very dangerous time.

This wonderful song unites us as believers in the Lord through the wonderful promises He has given us in scripture. We are from different countries and may speak different languages but God is no respecter of persons. All praise to God for His wisdom, His love, His mighty power!

Wow! This hymn is too wonderful and glorious, so supplying and satisfying. What shall we say and do for all that our God is and has done. Lord transform us into the image of Thy dear Son for this is Your heart's desire and pleasure. As for Satan what can he do? Christ is Victor!
