A mighty Fortress is our God

1
A mighty Fortress is our God,
A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
2
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
3
And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
4
That word above all earthly powers,
No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go,
This mortal life also;
The body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still,
His Kingdom is forever.

And though this world, with devils filled,

Should threaten to undo us,

We will not fear, for God hath willed

His truth to triumph through us:

Very comforting and apt at this point in time in the world. One feels there’s no hope for peace but we serve a God of peace

Well, Praise the Lord we’re in the same Fight for the Truth with our brothers Nee and Lee who did nothing but Fight. And today the “Present Truth” (Pet. ), what God is unveiling and recovering today. A classic conference on the Truth is Memorial Day 2021? including this fight. Praise the Lord.

This hymn could be called a biography of Martin Luther. Not only did he fight for the truth of the Bible but for his life and the lives of his family.

I love this hymn! I was just reflecting on my life and out of the blue this hymn was on my mind and in my heart. Born and raised Catholic I’ve heard this song a million or more times. Now, in my mature years, it resonates within my soul!

How great is our God!

That word above all earthly powers,

(The word of God is above all earthly powers)

No thanks to them, abideth;

(The word abides, when the earthly powers fight against it, no thanks to the earthly powers: the earthly powers can’t determine the life of the word)

The Spirit and the gifts are ours

(The Holy Spirit and His gifts are forever given unto us)

Through Him who with us sideth:

(Due to Jesus who died for us, who sides with us)

Let goods and kindred go,

This mortal life also;

The body they may kill:

God’s truth abideth still,

His Kingdom is forever.

I don’t understand the beginning of the fourth verse.

This was my Grand father's favorite hymn. I have sung it to myself over and over. The words are powerful and true!! Much strength to encourage us to press on for Him
