How tedious and tasteless the hours

How tedious and tasteless the hours
When Jesus no longer I see!
Sweet prospects, sweet birds and sweet flow’rs,
Have all lost their sweetness to me.
The midsummer sun shines but dim,
The fields strive in vain to look gay;
But when I am happy in Him
December’s as pleasant as May.
2
His name yields the richest perfume,
And sweeter than music His voice;
His presence disperses my gloom,
And makes all within me rejoice.
I should, were He always thus nigh,
Have nothing to wish or to fear;
No mortal so happy as I;
My summer would last all the year.
3
Content with beholding His face,
My all to His pleasure resigned;
No changes of season or place,
Would make any change in my mind.
While blessed with a sense of His love,
A palace a toy would appear;
And prisons would palaces prove,
If Jesus would dwell with me there.
4
My Lord, if indeed I am Thine,
If Thou art my sun and my song,
Say, why do I languish and pine?
And why are my winters so long?
Oh, drive these dark clouds from the sky,
Thy soul-cheering presence restore;
Or take me to Thee up on high,
Where winter and clouds are no more.

We found a handwritten copy of this song in 4 torn parts and had it recently mounted with acid-free glass, etc. at our History Room at the Cambridge City Indiana Library. It said the thing was written in 1824.

Beautiful testimonies to the power that our loving Saviour has upon the heart made in the image of God. Jesus met all the needs of the people in the long ago, and continues to meet our needs today as we think of Him. He is the one who makes the living word so lively and quickening. This song came to my mind the other day as I was contemplating a very tedious job I knew was coming. But, I only remembered the title of the hymn and forgot that the real tedium comes from losing sight of Jesus. Everything else is doable with Him. With our Shepherd who carries His lambs in His arms we might be cast down but not destroyed, persecuted but not forsaken, troubled on every side but not distressed. No other religion offers the help that the Lord gives to the creatures that came from His hand. He knows what we need--love, tough and soft. That's what Jesus brought back to the world. We love Him because He first loved us--to the end.

I grew up hearing James Cleveland singing this with his singers, and I fell in love with it even as a young girl, feeling the anointing of the words. Now, I am here getting the words to teach it to my own singing group. LOVE this hymn.

This was one of my Mother's favorite hymns. She would have been 90 today, Valentine's Day, and I love remembering her through hearing her this song.

I have loved this song for so long. It has a way of driving gloom from my heart. The Lord is good.

My granny used to sing this when she worked around the house...I have not heard it in 60 years! Good memories!

I love this song and recently heard it sung at our church. I love it and can't wait to memorize all the words so I can sing it to my kids.

This is a hymn we sang at the church I attended when I was a child. This hymn recently came to mind. The lyrics are beautiful.

When I was walking in the world without The Lord, my life was empty and fearful; When I gave my life to The Lord in 1988 my days are all spring (even when I am downcast!) for I know Jesus will lift me up..

Glory to our Mighty savior!!
