Thy mighty love, O God, constraineth me

1
Thy mighty love, O God, constraineth me,
As some strong tide it presseth on its way,
Seeking a channel in my self-bound soul,
Yearning to sweep all barriers away.
2
Shall I not yield to that constraining power?
Shall I not say, O tide of love, flow in?
My God, Thy gentleness hath conquered me,
Life cannot be as it hath hither been.
3
Break through my nature, mighty, heavenly love,
Clear every avenue of thought and brain,
Flood my affections, purify my will,
Let nothing but Thine own pure life remain.
4
Thus wholly mastered and possessed by God,
Forth from my life, spontaneous and free,
Shall flow a stream of tenderness and grace,
Loving, because God loved, eternally.

Flood my affections, purify my will,

Let nothing but Thine own pure life remain.

Lord make our will to be willing and submissive so that you can operate in it.

The Lord gave me this hymn this morning during my prayer devotional time as I was praying for a new believer in Christ. I was deeply touched with stanza 4 how the Lord gains us to flow his love out to others.

Break through my nature, mighty, heavenly love,

Clear every avenue of thought and brain,

Flood my affections, purify my will,

Let nothing but Thine own pure life remain.

We sang this song a week ago with a group of brothers and sisters in the Lord one week ago. Although I have known and have sung this hymn for decades by the Lord's new and fresh light I saw it in a new and fresh way. It worked all week in me until today. I have known the constraining love of Christ drawing me, force-ably pressing me on all sides, limiting me to just Himself. But now I realize that I am not just a container of Him as love, but also a channel. The last verse speaks of his goal to flow forth from our lives in a spontaneous and free way. This is not for our sake, but for others whom He loves. So in order to flow out in such a pure way he has to break through our nature, and find a channel in our self bound soul. HIs love is mighty, but in such a gentle, tender way. Yes, He breaks, but 'tis SO sweet. All that gets broken are the walls of self and soul life that hinder Him from fully mastering and possessing us. Oh how I have fought to preserve myself. Now my self love and glory are sinking in shame. How glorious is the release and the flowing out of love and life for the salvation of others and for the building up and encouragement of my fellow members in His body!
