My goal is God Himself, not joy, nor peace

1
My goal is God Himself, not joy, nor peace,
Nor even blessing, but Himself, my God;
’Tis His to lead me there—not mine, but His—
At any cost, dear Lord, by any road.
2
So faith bounds forward to its goal in God,
And love can trust her Lord to lead her there;
Upheld by Him, my soul is following hard
Till God hath full fulfilled my deepest prayer.
3
No matter if the way be sometimes dark,
No matter though the cost be oft-times great,
He knoweth how I best shall reach the mark,
The way that leads to Him must needs be strait.
4
One thing I know, I cannot say Him nay;
One thing I do, I press towards my Lord;
My God my glory here, from day to day,
And in the glory there my great Reward.

"... Christians have God living within them; they have God's life in them. Hence, they may be considered the remarkable and exceptional ones among men. With these ones, what is the goal of their human life? They read the Bible and pray daily, and they also meet together and offer petitions regularly. What actually is their inclination? What do they want to obtain in their pursuit...?

... If Christians fail to ascertain this goal, then it is difficult for them to be normal, genuine Christians. This is because if a Christian does not have a proper goal, his direction and his way will be wrong; consequently, he will not conduct himself as a Christian. Therefore, ...Christians should know the proper Christian goal so that they may establish the proper Christian model...."

My goal is God Himself!

This hymn was written by Frances Brook (not Frederick), who also wrote "My home is God Himself."

---------------

Frances Brook, daughter of the Rev. James Brook, M.A., of Helme Edge, Meltham, Huddersfield, was born in Bath in 1870. Her interest in missions is deep, and delicate health alone has prevented her from giving her services in the foreign field where two of her sisters are laboring.

Written in April, 1896. "The need of a friend called forth and formulated the unspoken attitude of my soul towards God, 'My goal is God'" (Author's MS.),. - John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology 1907

This song never ceases to supply me. the Lord constantly reminds me-my goal is God Himself, not joy nor peace, not even blessing but Himself my God. Lord, may this remain my only goal-God. May I do one thing-press on till You come. Come, Lord Jesus.

Not many people know who F Brook is but his experience with God in this hymn helps so many people in Christ to climb up another hurdle of life as a Christian. As such we should not despise ourselves but be a pattern to others by living in one spirit with the Lord. I thank the Lord for His faithfulness in encouraging me to enter into His chamber and share His heart desire with others.

It is a hymn I love to sing alone at the end of a long, busy day. It is also good to sing to Him early in the morning. This is one of my top favorite hymns and I have been singing this since high school. Throughout all these years of ups and downs, this hymn has been a constant source of encouragement.

I love this song because it always speaks to my heart to press on despite all opposition.

Only the second half of stanza 2 is changed:

2. So faith bounds forward to its goal in God,

And love can trust her Lord to lead her there;

Oh, may He save me from myself, that God

May flood my being with His all fore'er.
