Out in the highways and byways of life

1
Out in the highways and byways of life,
  Many are weary and sad;
Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife,
  Making the sorrowing glad.

Make me a blessing, make me a blessing,
Out of my life may Jesus shine;
Make me a blessing, O Savior, I pray,
  Make me a blessing to someone today.
2
Tell the sweet story of Christ and His love,
  Tell of His pow'r to forgive;
Others will trust Him if only you prove
  True, every moment you live.
3
Give as 'twas given to you in your need,
  Love as the Master loved you;
Be to the helpless a helper indeed,
  Unto your mission be true.

My experience was similar to Bob's. The chorus came to me from years past as I was waking. It was the expression of my heart's desire. Singing it brought verses 1 & 3 to my memory. Thank you, Holy Spirit. I hope to live it today.

Great old song, been singing it for over 65 years, it's Christ's commission to us when He ascended!!!

As Ashley, I sang this song in a Baptist church (but in Chicopee, Massachusetts) as a youth almost 60 years ago. I had forgotten it until it popped up in my head this morning shortly after I woke up. That was a blessing all on its own! I even remembered some of the words, but eventually wound up on this site to read and sing them all again. Thank you for this old favorite so much!

I sang this song more than 40 years ago as a young Christian in a Baptist church in the state of Rhode Island. One of my good friends' mother basically chose this hymn as her life song. She has since passed into glory so I say to Jesse, may The Lord make me a blessing to someone today.

I pray that God will open our eyes to the many broken and lost souls right within our sphere of influence so we may be used by the Master to be His blessing to someone today. To Him be all glory and power-Halelluhah!

You know, when I sing this song I ask myself this terrible question, "Lord, am I a blessing to everyone? to everybody? to my parents? to my friends? to the brothers and sisters? and if not, am I a curse?" And the Lord answered me.

And I prayed to the Lord, Lord if I am not a blessing then

make me a blessing!

Brothers and sisters, we need to praise the Lord, for He became a blessing to us. If we feel that we are not a blessing to anybody, the only thing we should do is enjoy and pursue Christ as a Blessing and eventually we will become a blessing to everyone." Lord make me a blessing. Praise the Lord!!!!

I'm grateful for this song. It reminds me that I must be useful for the Master everytime. I just want to let Him shine out of my life. Along the way He has placed many that are in need of this wonderful Savior. I want Him to make me a blessing to someone today and every moment of my life! Only He is able!!!!! Love as the Master loved you!
