Fight the good fight with all thy might

E872
1
Fight the good fight with all thy might!
Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right;
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
Thy joy and crown eternally.
2
Run the straight race through God's good grace,
Lift up thine eyes, and seek His face;
Life with its way before us lies,
Christ is the path, and Christ the prize.
3
Cast care aside, lean on thy Guide;
His boundless mercy will provide;
Trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its life, and Christ its love.
4
Faint not nor fear, His arms are near,
He changeth not, and thou art dear;
Only believe, and thou shalt see
That Christ is all in all to thee.

Was feeling a really down yesterday, I found myself singing this particular hymn at night, and I knew I had to fight the good fight and seek strength in Christ. I'm blessed by this hymn.

Was singing another hymn this morning, and somehow automatically switched to that part of this hymn, "Lay hold on Life, and it shall be Thy joy and crown eternally"; one of my favorite hymns from Sunday School days.

At about 4:30 a. m. this morning, the words "lay hold on life" were on my mind. I found them in this hymn.

To have to “fight the good fight” may superficially seem to be a contradiction with Jesus' words about coming to Him and finding rest for our souls. In that context (Matthew 11:28-30) though He is talking about rest from rules and regulations of the Pharisees. It comes back again to maintaining our relationship with Him. He promises life in all its fullness, but we do need to "lay hold of it".

This is a Christ-exalting hymn as it speaks of Him being our strength, our path, our prize, our life, our love, and our right! “He is my all in all” as a more modern song puts it.

I was astonished to know that others have had the experience of waking up with the verse of a hymn on their minds. I hunted through all my hymn books without success- then I thought of the internet - thank you! I lost a good friend (a priest) aged 98 years just a few days ago - I had helped him with his correspondence when his sight began to fail. Although I have a strong faith, nevertheless, when I lost my dear friend, I felt just a little bit further away from God. However, this morning, the verse on my mind told me: "Only believe, and thou shalt see that Christ is all in all to thee". yes - from "Fight the Good Fight".

Having sought the LORD, turned to Him, experience a divine work of deliverance, unto freedom, joy, intent and determination, I am inspired to run a good race. I am athletic and when I run, this hymn inspires me.

This hymn helped me to get through a period of spiritual attack/warfare, but praise His name, through the Blood of the Lord I was able to come through victorious.

I haven't sung this for years, but can't ever forget it. Recently, it's been on my mind, for some reason. I just had to look up the words, and am glad I did. Thank you for this website, Thanks also to the late Messrs Monsell and Boyd for writing this wonderful hymn, and above all to the Lord for all His blessings!

Each stage of life and the race is supported by the tender understanding that underpins the confident strength of this hymn. Love it!
