Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.
Ready, my God, Thy will to see;
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit Divine!
Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
Everything false will disappear.
Tidings of mercy everywhere;
Open my heart and let me prepare
Love with Thy children thus to share.
More of Thy love in word and deed;
What shall I fear while yet Thou dost lead?
Only for light from Thee I plead.

Preparing the Sunday School lesson for this week on 2 Kings 2-6, this song came to my mind. The prophet Elisha prayed to Heavenly Father to open the eyes of his servant who was fearful when he saw the Syrian chariots and horses surrounding their city. Elisha had told him "They that be with us are more than they that be with them." And the eyes of the servant were opened. I am grateful for the blessings I received as I heard and reviewed the words of this hymn from my childhood and I am reminded to open my eyes, ears, mouth and mind to the Holy Ghost to be guided for the Lord's work.

I was reading a devotion this morning, “You Will Have Power” by Max Lucado, from his new book Unshakable Hope. The focus was on the power of the Holy Spirit that is promised. ““You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8). As I pondered the power of the Holy Spirit working in and through my life, the words of this hymn came to mind. How thankful I am for the old hymns and their scripture-centered messages!

I was studying 1 John 5 about praying for those in darkness and thought of this hymn. It’s words are so appropriate for both believers who seek to understand deeper truths, and those who don’t realize their actions are far from God’s will and His best for their life.

Reading John chapter 9. Jesus heals the man blind from birth. Of course the Pharisees have to question the man and his parents because Jesus healed him on the Sabbath. The man said, "All I know is that I was blind, but now I see!" How great is our God and Savior Jesus Christ! I was reminded of this song from many years ago and enjoyed reading all of the verses.

This morning I was reading 2 Kings 6:8-23, I prayed that my eyes would see the world around me with spiritual eyes, and the words of this beautiful hymn popped into my head. I felt that I was surrounded by others who pray this same prayer.
Lord, let us not be overwhelmed with the ways of the world, but open our eyes that we may see Your truth! Amen.

I was reading Psa 119:2 this morning. I had to stop and remind myself that even though seeking HIM with my whole heart might seem difficult with all the stuff happening around me. I started praising Father for putting in me Holy Spirit. I am a new creature, not made to desire selfish sin but to desire righteousness. As I prayed; Lord open my eyes only to see you...this song came to mind. Haven't thought of it for years. It was right on target. Praise you Father for Jesus and for taking such good care of me.

I am a young person and I want to encourage other young persons to meditate on these hymns that are filled with timeless truths. Indeed our music today is awesome but sadly there has been a shift where much of it has hidden lies about our great God. We don't have to chain ourselves to the music of the 21st century just because it is all around us. We don't have to resort to it. We can seek after righteousness and truth on websites like these and listen to timeless hymns which capture the truth of God's Word.
And just think, which is more important? Having our hearts thumping to the latest rhythm (no doubt it really is a good rhythm) or having our hearts in tune with God's will for our lives?

Awesome hymn preparing our hearts, mind and soul for the word of God.....
Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready, my God, Thy will to see;
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine.
