Here is an example of a husband and wife who together wrote and composed this well beloved hymn. Civilla wrote the text based on an experience she underwent and William composed the music for his wife’s text.

One morning, Civilla lay sick in bed. Her husband was scheduled to preach a sermon in a nearby church. He almost canceled but their son encouraged him to go by saying that God would take care of her. When he returned, his wife wrote a poem titled, “Be not dismayed whate’er betide.” After reading it, he sat on the piano. The tune was completed that same night.

She is also known for a hymn written in 1905 “His Eye is on the Sparrow.”

Civilla was married to evangelist William Martin. While in New York, in 1905, the couple became friends with the Dolittles.

Mrs. Dolittle had been bedridden for 20 years and her husband was crippled in a wheelchair. Civilla wrote: “Despite their afflictions, they lived happy Christian lives, bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. One day, while we were visiting the Doolittles, my husband commented on their bright hopefulness and asked them for the secret. Mrs. Dolittle’s reply was simple: ‘His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.’ The beauty of this simple expression of boundless faith gripped their hearts and fired the imagination of Dr. Martin and me. The song, ‘His eye is on the sparrow,’ was the outcome of that experience.

Too many trials and tribulations around me and my family at the moment. just sitting down crying as I couldn’t wrap my head around it. then this beautiful song came to my mind and I can’t but sing it with belief and hope on God that he will take care of us. surely God will take care of me and my family in Jesus Christ name.. Amen

It is now that I understand why my grandma used to like this song. Every night before we go to sleep we used to sing this song. The peace and hope that you experience in this is like no other. Whoever authored this song should be blessed for eternity. This song washes our my fears, my anxiety, my stress, my confusion. I love it

This is one of my absolute favourites and singing it just allows me to let the Lord wrap Himself around me and comfort me. He will take care of me whatever the test may be!
