Beneath the cross of Jesus
I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty Rock
Within a weary land;
A home within the wilderness,
A rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat,
And the burden of the day.
I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty Rock
Within a weary land;
A home within the wilderness,
A rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat,
And the burden of the day.

Oh, safe and happy shelter!
Oh, refuge tried and sweet!
Oh, trysting place where heaven's love
And heaven's justice meet.
As to the holy patriarch
That wondrous dream was given,
So is my Savior by the cross
A ladder up to heaven.
Oh, refuge tried and sweet!
Oh, trysting place where heaven's love
And heaven's justice meet.
As to the holy patriarch
That wondrous dream was given,
So is my Savior by the cross
A ladder up to heaven.

There lies beneath its shadow,
But on the farther side,
The darkness of an awful grave
That gapes both deep and wide;
And there between us stands the cross,
Two arms outstretched to save,
Like a watchman set to guard the way
From that eternal grave.
But on the farther side,
The darkness of an awful grave
That gapes both deep and wide;
And there between us stands the cross,
Two arms outstretched to save,
Like a watchman set to guard the way
From that eternal grave.

Upon that cross of Jesus
Mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One,
Who suffered there for me;
And from my smitten heart, with tears,
Two wonders I confess,
The wonders of His glorious love,
And my own worthlessness.
Mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One,
Who suffered there for me;
And from my smitten heart, with tears,
Two wonders I confess,
The wonders of His glorious love,
And my own worthlessness.

I take, O cross, thy shadow
For my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than
The sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by,
To know no gain nor loss,
My sinful self my only shame,
My glory all the cross.
For my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than
The sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by,
To know no gain nor loss,
My sinful self my only shame,
My glory all the cross.

Very Inspiring song that touches people's heart. Also it is medicine for the sick souls. Always when I sing this song it becomes blessing to me because it reminds me that there is no other place Christians can hide, trust and hope except in the cross of our Lord Jesus, the author of our journey. Hallelujah.

I love this song. There is no other place I can see I am forgiven except the cross.

This a beautiful hymn on the completed work of CHRIST on the cross. For my wife and to lot of us it brings tears in appreciation of the cost of redemption. May we never forget this free gift. A sinner called and saved by grace. All we had to do was to say THANK YOU. And all we need to take our part - practice/practise. It is a Noun and Verb.

Wonderful! A wonderful song of appreciation of the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, truly inspired by the Holy Spirit. I thank the Lord for leading me to discover this wonderful song that I never knew exists. Lord I bless Your name. Thank You for inspiring Your children for songs like this. I cannot find words that can adequately express my gratitude to You, but thank You that You know my heart.

Elizabeth Cecelia Clephane spent her whole life in Scotland. Daughter of a county sheriff, she grew up in the village of Melrose. She suffered from poor health most of her life, but that didn't keep her from serving others. She regularly helped the poor and those with disabilities, even selling a horse and carriage to give more money. Her cheery attitude and selfless spirit earned her the nickname, "The Sunbeam of Melrose." She wrote 8 hymns, including "The Ninety and Nine." - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton
Lovely hymn

I especially enjoy in v4:
And from my smitten heart, with tears,
Two wonders I confess,
The wonders of His glorious love,
And my own worthlessness.
This is such a great summary of what I feel when I read the account of the Lord's suffering for me.

Am 85 taking care of 92 year old husband of 61 years. Cannot go to church as once did. Can hear sermons on tv, but miss the music. When humming or singing it brings back the Scripture.
Thank You!

It is so comforting to know that we have Christ as a mighty Rock to stabilize us and cover us with its shadow when life becomes a weary land.
