About the author, Horatio G. Spafford:

In November 1873, Spafford decided to take his entire family to Europe for a vacation, intending also to assist Moody in his evangelistic work once he arrived there. However, Spafford was unexpectedly detained in Chicago due to urgent business concerns, but decided to send his family aboard the S.S. Ville du Harve as scheduled. Midway through the trans-Atlantic voyage, S.S. Ville du Harve was struck by the English vessel Loch Earn and eventually foundered. Spafford's four daughters—Anna, eleven; Maggie, nine; Bessie, seven; and Tanetta, two—were among the 226 who perished in the aftermath. Mrs. Spafford, one of the few who were spared, sent her husband the heartbreaking telegram: “Saved alone.”

Spafford immediately sailed for England to join his grief-stricken wife. As his ship passed the approximate location where his daughters had drowned, his deep sorrow mingled with his unwavering faith in God's goodness caused him to compose the hymn, "It Is Well."

It is indeed a song of assurance. In time of need and when the worries take up my heart and it looks as if faith is no more there, His gentle voice came and remind me, Whatever my lot in this aging world that "IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL" and quickly faith takes its place and worries vanished. I recently had something unpleasant happen. As I was praying to God a gentle voice whispered, "All is well with my soul." I'd never even heard these lyrics until today. I believe that what God is saying to me is that whatever happens in this life that He's there and He's in control and that He has His hands on us. No matter what we go through in this life, nothing can compare to the glory that awaits the person who belongs to Christ. Because of this promise, we may always, no matter what our circumstances look like, say with assurance that All IS WELL WITH MY SOUL.

I thank the Lord for this wonderful and blessed hymn. This is my favorite hymn and I love to sing it over and over again. When my father and mother passed away, we sang this hymn during their funeral. Both of them had receive the Lord. So inspiring, enriching and powerful hymn! When I'm in deep sorrow, distress and trials, through this hymn my spirit is being uplifted and I regain the strength and encouragement I needed. We have to remember that death is not a bad thing for a Christian. It means to be done with this world of sin. My son, Saul, died at age 8. He is the lucky one. His two brothers and half brother and sister are all struggling with alcohol, music, drugs, and relationships. Saul was the lucky one. If you have not read the circumstances under which this hymn was written, please find them out. What faith! What inspiration!! Praise God!
