How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
2
"Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand."
3
"When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress."
4
"When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine."
5
"E'en down to old age all My people shall prove
My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love;
And then, when grey hairs shall their temples adorn,
Like lambs they shall still in My bosom be borne."
6
"The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no, never, no, never forsake!"

The first scripture reference in my hymnal is 2 Tim. 2:19:

See hymnary dot org hymn HFFG1976 32

“Howbeit the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his:.. ,”

2 Tim. 2:19a(ASV) emphasis added

The TSK supplies awesome concordance:

See blueletterbible

“The Lord”

Num 16:5; Psa 1:6; Psa 37:18, 28; Nah 1:7; Mat 7:23; Luk 13:27; Jhn 10:14; Jhn 10:27-30; Jhn 13:18; Rom 8:28; Rom 11:2; 1Co 8:3; Gal 4:9; Rev 17:8

Finally Matthew Henry’s commentary seems to descant with the hymn writer on 2 Tim. 2:19

Also at blueletterbible

“All the attacks which the powers of darkness have made upon the doctrine of Christ cannot shake it; it stands firm, and weathers all the storms which have been raised against it. ”

To Sandra Stewart, Amen.

He is the same yesterday and today and forever. This whole Corvid-19 is not a surprise to Him and that brings me much comfort and peace.

The world has changed and so has our lives; but our Jehovah God remains the same loving heavenly father.

In Jesus, His Son and our Saviour, we have everything we need for life.

He has not forsaken His own.

Amen.

Allan Ashurst is right. There is a second verse missing.

An extra verse. It comes second in "Favourite Songs Of The Church" ISBN0 9514459 1 4. There the hymn's author is given as R. Keene.

2. In every condition - in sickness and health,

In poverty's vale or abounding in wealth,

At home and abroad, on the land or the sea,

As your days may demand, so your succour shall be.

Has anyone seen this elsewhere?

These words have been set to several hymm tunes. The most common one is 'Foundation'.

As another comment has apready pointed out, it has also bee set to 'Adeste Fideles', the same tune as "O Come All Ye Faithful". More recently, a musician called Richard Simpkin composed a new tune, which is how I first heard "How Firm a Foundation".

I was recently diagnosed with ALS and one of my favorite verses has become Isaiah 43:1-2 which is represented in the third and fourth stances. Does anyone know what versus the other stanzas reflect?

I love this faith building hymn!

Revised version:

1. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,

Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!

What more can He say than to you He hath said,

To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

2. He never shall perish who in Him believes;

None can from His hand snatch the sheep He receives;

The Father is greater and one with the Son;

Of those He has giv'n Him, He will not lose one.

3. Oh, who can accuse me whom God justified?

For debt, still pursue me for whom the Lord died?

God's righteousness given me, who can negate?

From Christ's love now mine, who can me separate?

4. He'll never discard those who to Him draw nigh,

But save to the end all who on Him rely;

He's my very life; of His Body a part,

And e'en one with Him, can I e'er be apart?

5. When met with temptation, when foe would deceive,

When heart, tossed by storm, finds it hard to believe,

I quick cast faith's anchor, to God's word hold fast,

Which, firm and secure, shall eternally last.
